someong has given me a tyan thunder k8we and 2 x opteron 280s for it.

The board has no retainers, though it has back plates and long screws on either side of each processor (the previous owner had a water cooler and has lost the retainers since he didn't need them).

I have one artic cooling freezer pro 64 and I was going to buy another one and use these together with the 2 x opteron 280s. Would these be ok - and are retainers for socket 940s all the same or varying sizes for different coolers? If so how would I find out which to buy?

Finally, are there any coolers that don't need retainers and can be screwed onto the screws directly?

These are probably things I should know but I'm fairly new to the process of putting pc's together.

thanks again for the help

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around
