When I try to defrag from any place, including safe mode, I get the message that is could not start. Have not made any recent changes except for a faulty modem, now replaced, which seemed to be the source of dirty bits for which I ran check disk when they appeared.

One other forum suggesting going to hidden devices and disable something I could not find. There were two devices yellow/marked and I stupidly uninstalled instead of disabling PV8630WDM. Don't know what it is? for VistaScan maybe?

On OpenDrivers.com I find a link to "Update your drivers". Is this a good idea in general? The site did not find the driver.

It is best to update the drivers from the computer or the device's manufacturer

Have you restarted the computer since you uninstalled whatever it was you uninstalled?

Go to your Event Viewer and look for errors and post them
