Yesterday two of my three browsers appeared to be highjacked and computer running slow. Help appreciated...

SYMPTOMS:
Netscape 9: No Problem
IE 7 & Firefox 3: Search results are mismatched in Yahoo Search and Google (haven't tired other search engines) EXAMPLE: Searching for "vampirekittcity" produces the following (abbreviated) list:

VampireKittyCity Home
About Us. Store. MySpace. Happy New Year from VampireKittyCity ... See what else is going on at. The Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter ...
www.shopica.com - Cached

MySpace.com - VampireKittyCity - 38 - Female - Michigan - www.myspace ...
MySpace profile for VampireKittyCity with pictures, videos, personal blog, interests, information about me and more ... VampireKittyCity 's Latest Blog Entry ...
www.hotjobs.com - 159k - Cached

NOTE: the top part of the result is okay but the url shown at the bottom of each is cr@p.

STEPS TAKEN SO FAR:
Updated MaCafee and used it to clean a lot of stuff
Updated to SP3
Installed/ran Spyware Dr. - clean some more up and computer began running faster
Installed/ran Spybot Search & Destroy
Installed/ran HJT

SYSTEM INFO:
DELL Dimension E521
OS: XP Media Center Edition/SP3

Possibly. The sysaudio.sys only exists in system32/drivers - not in system32 directly.

I searched system32 and have 3 wdmaud's:
1. wdmaud.drv C:\WINDOWS\system32
2. wdmaud.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32
3. wdmaud.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

Thanks and please advise.

I've found this information which seems relevant since I see "waiting for 7.7.7..." at the bottom of the browsers when the search results are coming back. http://www.techish.net/2009/01/10/google-7...r-malware-tool/

Hi,

2. wdmaud.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32

You have to delete that one. The one in the drivers folder is legitimate and the wdmaud.drv in the system32 folder is also legitimate

Yes, the same info as on my blog.
In anyway, you have to delete the wdmaud.sys present in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder
Let me know in your next reply if that solved your issue.

That was it! Thanks for the help.

I still think it should start-up and shut-down a lot faster so I'm going to go through the processes and see if any can be eliminated and if there are an processes that are unnecessary. If you have any other suggestions to improve performance I'd appreciate it.

thanks!

Hi,

If you have any other suggestions to improve performance I'd appreciate it.

Yes, see here: Help! My computer is slow!
But since you're having McAfee installed, I suspect it's the main cause of a slower system. Also see here: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/wha...fee-lately.html
