Hi Gumdrop. This one isn't bad at all. Let's fix it up.

Step #1

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocache/funwe...up1.0.0.8-2.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #2

Now let's do some routine cleanup. Download CCleaner and install it. Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #3

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi and thanks, OT.

I'd read somewhere, since posting that log, where it said that it's better to have everything checkmarked in msconfig/startup, for a better analysis. So I hope it was okay that I went in and checkmarked them all (except for MsnMsgr--it freezes up the computer on startup) for this scan.

On HJT, I checkmarked all the ones you listed, except for the third one--I didn't see it.

When I ran CCleaner, and it was doing its cleaning, a box popped up which said,

Error Deleting File
Cannot delete ngv_news_box1___|___-___
Cannot find the specified file.
Make sure you specify the correct path and filename.

I saw that the other night too when I ran CCleaner so this isn't something that's happened since Fixing in HJT just now.

On rebooting, I got a box which said:

Advance Sound System Driver Alert
The Advanced Sound System board is not responding properly.
Run Setup and reset your hardware configuration.

That IS new.

And WHILE booting up, got the following (on black screen with white letters), which is NOT new, just thought I'd throw it in here:

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows Application.

The Windows registry or System.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

C:\MTM\MTMCDAI.386
Press a key to continue

Thanks for your time and help. This computer is not my main one. This one is an old one that I gave to my teenager. It's horribly slow and it was our first computer we bought third hand several years ago....I don't remember it being THIS slow, but maybe it's because it was my first that I didn't notice it being so slow?
My son isn't happy with it at all, so it's good that I have two other computers! But I wanted to try to get this one to working somewhat better.

Hi Gumdrop. Looking better. We have more item to fix

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

The MTMCDAI.386 file is a driver relating to a Mitsumi CDROM drive. Reinstall the drivers for your CD drive to repair the installation.

I don't know what the ngv_news_box1 is. I have never seen or heard of it. You can try and do a search and see if you find it but I double if you will.

Finally, regarding the Sound System Driver Alert follow the directions and reinstall the sound card drivers. It is either a configuration issue or the card is oging bad. See what happens.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

There's the last scan. Thank you OT. I'll see what I can figure out from the tips you gave me on the CD ROM driver and the sound card drivers...I may have to come back and ask questions...

Hey Gumdrop. Your log is clean. Good job! Any other problems (except the driver ones we talked about earlier)?

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus application like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and antivirus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
