I have some sort of browser hijacker that's giving me false google results and isn't allowing me to connect to a lot of pages (like bleepingcomputer.com). I can't download DDS as my browser isn't allowing me to go to the download page. In Firefox I get a failed to connect page. In IE I get taken to a fake google search page.

Here is my HiJackThis log:

Hi dakranii

Some browser hijackers and downloaders such as 'Trojan:Win32/Zbot.BX ' - have been/are active on your computer. It is known that these trojans can communicate with remote computers, download and run code, send emails and redirect browser requests. Unfortunately we cannot be sure about what they have done.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojans have been identified there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.

For more information read ....Here
If you choose to format and reinstall read...... Here

Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will of course do our best to clean the computer of any infections that we can see but, as I already stated, we can in no way guarantee it to be trustworthy again.

If you do wish to continue:

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix). DO NOT use it just yet.

Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Thanks

Starbuck, thank you for the response.

I just handed the laptop to our sys admin at work to reformat. I tried to go through your instructions, but I was being prevented from doing most of it.

First, I couldn't navigate to the page where SDFix was located. Both IE and Firefox came up with can't connect errors. So I downloaded it on my other laptop and transfered it on a thumbdrive. Then the SDFix wouldn't run and extract the files, so I did the same thing on my other laptop and transfered.

Finally, when restarting in Safe Mode it would lock up when I'd try to use my keyboard. I couldn't even get past the logon prompt. I tried about 6 or 7 times. The second I tried to type in my password to login, it would freeze.

Thank you for your help.

Hi dakranii

I just handed the laptop to our sys admin at work to reformat.

Given the problems trying to run SDFix... i'd say you have made the right decision.
Thanks for letting us know.
I'll now close this thread, if you have any problems in the future please start a new thread.
