Please help! I've obviously been infected with something, but am unable to figure out what is causing this. Task Manager says that EXPLORER.EXE is taking 50% of CPU time... but this only happens when my WIFI card is plugged in. When I take it out and disconnect from the net...everything goes back to normal. I've run McAfee virus scan and Ad Aware SE and have everything important blocked with the firewall but can't figure it out. Below is the HiJack Log File. Any help would be appreciated with a monetary donation.

Hi Tigidal and Welcome to The Bleeping Computer!!!

Please Download Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

Click Download>Run and then run again!

If any type of report is generated, please save it!

Make sure Ad Aware is Updated and Configured just as described in the link below!

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...showtutorial=48

Reboot into SAFE MODE(Tap F8 when restarting)
Here is a link on how to boot into Safe Mode:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

After restarting in Safe Mode,Configure Windows to Show All Hidden Files and Folders, this must be done after restarting in Safe Mode!!

Here is a link to help with that
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...showtutorial=62

Be sure to follow the directions that apply to your Operating System!

Locate and Delete

C:\WINDOWS\System32\btxppanel.dll<< File Only!

Open HijackThis and put a check by these but DO NOT hit the Fix Checked button yet!

Cretemonster,

I appreciate your help... I've done everything you said and the issues still exists. The only item that did not work in your instructions was the Unregistering the btxppanel.dll driver. I was able to delete it, but both of the instructions run from the Run prompt failed.

Below are the new log file from Panda Active Scan and HijackThis:

Go to Add\Remove Programs and Remove

MyWay
Kazza

Please download rkfiles.zip and unzip it to its own permanent folder.
http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip

Dont run it yet!

Restart the computer in Safe Mode.

Locate and Delete these

C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys<< File!

C:\Documents and Settings\Nicholas\Start Menu\SideStep.lnk<< File!

C:\Program Files\MyWay<< Folder!

C:\Program Files\Kazaa<< Folder!

Locate the rkfiles.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient.

When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

Locate C:\log.txt Copy&Paste those Results back here!

Run another Online Scan here
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/home.as...JMRDOLLNKSGGNOL

Please choose the Virus Scan>>It will take a bit to complete!

If it flags anything Infected,I will need to know the filename and location!

Post those results along with the Results from RKFiles!

OK,lets talk Wireless now!

First...Can you make a Direct landline Connection on this PC?

I mean unplug it all....Just connect the PC to the Main line that feeds the Network and tell me what happens then!

Tell me as much about the Wireless setup that you have....how is the Network setup...how many PCs are on it....What routers you are using and what Software if any is installed for security of this Network?

Cretemonster,

Unfortunately... I'm leaving for a week to get married. Hopefully you'll still be available to help when I return.

Wireless is my only option. I live in an apartment and leech of my landlord's wireless router, so can't plug in directly to test. Also not sure what kind of security software he has on his end. There are only two computers on the network though, I can tell you that much.

I use a Cisco wireless card and use Cisco Aironet Client Utility to manage my connection.

Not sure if that gives you anything useful. I'll check back with you when I return. Thanks again!

Congradulations.....I think!!!!

I still say, find a place to plug this machine into a direct non routed connection and see what happens to explorer then!

Let me look back through the logs and see what else may cause this!

Hi there,

I just found this post through google because I am also suffering of the same problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 running XPpro and from time to time explorer charges 50% of my CPU when I start up the computer and log on to the network. When I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete it shows 50% CPU on explorer constantly and if I try to close any processes it never happens. I have to keep my off button pressed for a few seconds to make it shut down.
Normally this happens 1-2 times per week and if I shut off the computer and restarts it again it normally works perfectly. So this is not a constant error but comes every once in a while at startup. I have a cable connection to the LAN (I saw you suggested not to have wireless).

I have also noticed problems in reading CD:s/DVD:s in my DVD-burner. It is a HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N . Generally if I put in a DVD or CD it will not find it but if I open my DVD-burn program first (Sonic) it will find the disc and I can read te contents.
I suspected that DLA could be the problem and tried to disable it but if I disable DLA and restart the computer the DLA s still active if i recheck the settings. It seems not to want to be disabled.

I am very interested to see if you find a solution to this problem.

I also just want to give maximum credit to you guys who help out with these annoying computer errors. You are sending a lot of good vibes around the globe.

best regards

Johan

Doesn't sound like we are having the exact same problem. Explorer.exe takes 50% of the processor ALL THE TIME I'm online. It doesn't matter if a restart a million times, each time it restarts and connects to the network Explorer.exe starts in. The only way that I can even type this message right now or do anything productive is to kill Explorer.exe and just work without my bottom toolbar.

I'm getting close to hopelessness, and if I can't figure something out to solve this problem soon I may have to resort to a full system re-install.... which I so don't want to do.

If anyone else out there can shed some light... Please do!
