bought a dell computer with vista operating system, and now can not find a driver to get it to scan. I have never used a scanner, so do not know much about them, or how to scan things properly. Thank you

What is the make and model of your scanner?

Edit: Too late at night for me, I didn't see the nec 636i in the title.

The latest driver that I could find was dated Feb. 2003.

I am afraid that, as this is a very old scanner, there are no drivers available for Vista.

Yes, NEC no longer even acknowledge scanners in their support downloads, and people couldn't even get a 636i to function in XP, as it only supported up to Windows 2000. You need to buy an inexpensive Vista compatible scanner. Even a low-price model will probably give better results than the NEC did anyway.
