Of late my computer has become painfully slow upon connecting to the internet. I know this because when I switch off my router, I notice no drop in speed at all. What's happening is that while my computer is on, the start menu is incredibly slow to respond (more than a 10 second delay is not uncommon) and it's not unusual for applications to take 2 minutes to load after a relevant file for example.

As this only happens when I'm connected to the internet, I'm inclined to suspect either I'm hacked and unknowingly being used as a node for someone else's transactions, or I've got some kind of nasty on here.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.
Also please explain your problem as fully as possible. Each little detail will help in getting your system cleaned up and functional again.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:

* Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
DDS.com
DDS.scr
DDS.pif

* Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
* A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
* Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
* Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
* Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

There is an additional problem. I'm having trouble clearing out the remnants of a fujacks infection. While spoclsv.exe is completely gone from the active processes, I cannot get rid of the system and hidden desktop_.ini files as well as a setup.zip file containing a setup.exe file.

Here's the DDS log file:

reboot into safe mode and try to delete those files. As for the hidden files, just make them appear

1.Double-click on the My Computer icon.
2.Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
3.After the new window appears select the View tab.
4.Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
5.Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
6.Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
7.Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
8.Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close My Computer.
9.Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Then you should be able to see it and delete it. After that

Now hide the system files and folders
1.Double-click on the My Computer icon.
2.Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
3.After the new window appears select the View tab.
4.Remove the checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
5.Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Do not show hidden files and folders.
6.Place a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
7.Place a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
8.Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close My Computer.
9.Now your computer is configured to hide all hidden files again.

I tried all of the above to limited success. While I was able to get rid of the setup.zip file containing setup.exe, I had limited success with the desktop_.ini files.

While most of them were easy to delete, a few of them proved impossible to remove by conventional means. Here are screen caps of the problem files including their locations:

When I tried deleting them, I got the following error message:

Cannot delete Desktop_: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

When I tried altering their read only attirbutes through windows, I got the following error message:

An error occurred applying attributes to the file:

C:\ec1d38d616a13c72261a339...\Desktop_.ini

Access is denied.

When I tried using the attrib command in the command prompt, I was told that access was denied.

How is your computer acting now? Not all desktop.ini files need to be deleted. In fact most of them should just be left alone. So unless a scan says they are infected, it may be useless trying to go any further with them.

Also would you please do the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan from instructions earlier? But do a Full scan instead of a quick scan please.

But the files I'm talking about aren't called desktop.ini, they're called desktop_.ini. Also the computer has gotten somewhat slower. Currently performing the full system scan for Anti-Malware. So far 2 viruses have been found just on the C: drive alone.

Sorry about that, someplace I dropped the underscore. I even had the fix bookmarked.

Go to the run command and type in regedit.

Go to the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In the right pane find the value “svcshare”=”%System%\Drivers\spoclsv.exe” and delete it.

Reboot the computer, run a full scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Now search for desktop_.ini, and you should be able to delete any that remain.

Therein lies the problem- the registry value you mention isn't present. This has all the hallmarks of the fujacks infection, yet while I cleared out that registry value months ago, the files still remain and access keeps getting denied.

After doing the full system scan, the following issues showed up:

Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\scrfile\shell\open\command\ (Broken.OpenCommand) -> Bad: (NOTEPAD.EXE %1) Good: ("%1" /S) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile\shell\open\command\ (Broken.OpenCommand) -> Bad: (NOTEPAD.EXE %1) Good: (regedit.exe "%1") -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Try this online scan: F-Secure Online Scanner

The online scanner is on the bottom right of the page.
Follow the directions in the F-Secure page for proper Installation.

* You may receive an alert on the address bar at this point to install the ActiveX control.
* Click on that alert and then click "Install ActiveX component".
* Read the license agreement and click "Accept".
* Click "Full System Scan" to download the scanning components and begin scan and cleaning.
* When the scan completes, click the "I want to decide item by item" button.
* For each item found, Select "Disinfect" and click "Next".
* When done, click the "Show Report" button, then copy and paste the entire report into your next reply.
This scan can take several hours, so please be patient.

If this doesn't get rid of the problem, then the next thing to try is to download and burn UBCD to a CD, boot to it, and then use one of the file tools like file maven to remove the desktop_.ini files.

It doesn't seem to have worked. I'll try UBCD in the next 24 hours though.
