problem running laptop

Can any one help me, I bought a Sony Vario laptop and the warranty has just run out and the dam thing has packed in. When i try to start it up you can hear it start up as usual but the screen stays blank and then i cant shut it down and have to let the battery die. I havent dropped it and it hasnt had any knocks, any one got any idea before i throw it out the window?
