I have been trying to follow some instructions on ask metafilter http://ask.metafilter.com/101578/Is-this-a-new-virus#1474933 to clean up a virus on my wife's computer (not an expert in this field, but I do routinely work with computers as a programmer, fortunately have not previously had to deal with viruses much). This is my first post, thanks to this community for being there.

Instructions from askmetafilter say to use SmitFraudFix and ComboFix from this site. I have followed the instructions, but every time I attempt to run ComboFix, it reports that AVG resident scan is running, so I abort. I have deleted AVG 8, run CCleaner, checked running processes, don't seem to find anything related to AVG at all, tried to get at this numerous times.

Any suggestions much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hello rbmales.

Please do not run ComboFix, or follow any other directions given on that page. From what I read there, those people are not properly trained in malware removal.

Instead, start a new topic in the Am I Infected Forum regarding your issue.

Thanks,
The Panda

Hello rbmales,

ComboFix should not to be discussed outside the HijackThis forums and then only when requested by a HJT Team member. It is an extremely powerful tool which should only be used when instructed to do so by someone who has been properly trained. ComboFix is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Please create a new topic explaining the nature of your problem in the Am I infected? What do I do? forum. Describe pop-ups and system tray or desktop icons that have appeared. Explain what is "going wrong" with your computer. Note any tools you have used and their respective results.

If needed, we will direct you to our HJT Preparation Guide.

Thank you for using BleepingComputer as your malware removal source.
