I had a friend contact me yesterday because she was having issues with tons pop-ups. Her computer is approx 2-3 yrs old and is running Winxp SP2. I first had her run CC Cleaner and Advanced Windows Care to clean up/remove some junk. I then had her install and run HijackThis - she ran it, saved the log to send to me and I then had her close the program without making any changes. She also did not have an antivirus installed on her pc so I had her download and install AVG-Free 8.0. She was not able to update the database so I downloaded and sent her the .bin files to manually update the program. She was running a complete scan and will be giving me the results this morning.

I noticed several issues on her HijackThis log and am unsure how to go about fixing them - I've done spy/malware removal in the past but not for multiple issues. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Hello voodoolady,

Posted Image

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

As bad as this is it may take a little bit to run. Tell your friend that once it gets going to just walk away from it let it do its thing.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Thanks for the reply!

I attempted to have my friend run ComboFix as suggested, but she is not able to run the program - she would get an hourglass after double-clicking on it and it would then disappear and nothing else would happen. I had her disable her realtime AV protection, told her how to turn off her firewall before running the program (it was already disabled, as well as Windows automatic updates) and had her disable her LAN connection - nothing worked to get the program running.

Last night I had left her running an AV scan and she was to give me the results this morning - she informed me that computer froze before the scan was complete but it did manage to quarantine the following viruses before freezing:

c:\douments and settings\TARA\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\irgikhjw.exe Infection Trojan horse Agent.ZXZ Moved to Virus Vault
c:\Documents and Settings\Tara\Application data\SpeedRunner\SpeedRunner.exe Infection Trojan horse Generic11.BJXE moved to Virus Vault
c:\Documents and Settings\TARA\Application Data\SpeedRunner\SPUninstall.exe Infection Trojan horse Downloader.Agent.AOCO moved to virus vault

She was able to run HijackThis again and I have a new log to post as far as that goes. I don't know if there is any way to jumpstart things to get ComboFix to run or should she try running it in safe mode? We're open to suggestions and she is prepared to do whatever it takes to get her computer cleaned up and running properly again. Thanks in advance for any further info you can provide!

We ran into a problem with my friends computer after trying to disable the rootkit infection in order to run ComboFix - it wouldn't boot up. She got the message:

Windows could not start because the following file was missing or corrupt /Windows/system32/config/system
You can attempt to repair the system

I had her try to start in safe mode and the following error messages were received:
multi(0) disc(0) r disc(0) partition(1) /Windows/system32/ntoskrnl.exe
/Windows/system32/hal.dll
/Windows/system32/kdcom.dll
/Windows/system32/bootvid.dll
/Windows/system32/config/system
/Windows/system32/config/system.alt

We then attempted to do a system restore and got a whole laundry list of files that couldn't be copied. We are working on getting her a cd drive for the computer - the one installed on it is broken so we can try to run a repair with a disc - unless there is something else we can try to get it to boot up. Thanks for any info!

Yes, we did and it brought her right back to "Windows could not start because the following file was missing or corrupt /Windows/system32/config/system You can attempt to repair the system"

We were able to get all the system recovery files to finally load today only to get the same boot error as above that got us there in the first place.

Not yet - her cd drive is broken so she will be getting one this weekend and hopefully we'll be able to run recovery from the XP disc. It was loading system recovery files from the computer. There was a whole list of files that wouldn't open and I made note of them and will post them if you like.

Okay....well I don't know of anything else with all those critical files missing. She can't even do a full reformat without the CDROM. That actually might be best. Her system is very infected. :) Post back when she gets the CDROM. I'll be notified, so don't think the thread will be lost.

Hello again,

A couple of things.......if you want to go for recovery, then PLEASE don't do anything after you put the new ROM in. Post here and let me know first. :) A special colleague is going to navigate you through. Also, could you tell me, please, are you there with the infected machine? Are you in a position to transfer things from one computer to the other?

No, I'm not nearby her - but I'm this close to having her ship her tower to me or at the very least pull out the hard drive and send that to me. I have a few computers here and could switch out hard drives on one of them to get this done, and at that point I'd be able to move things from one to another. If that can't be done, then I will have her hold off on doing anything after the new ROM is in and await further instructions. Thank god for an all inclusive phone plan for all the long distance calls to walk her through doing these things

No kidding on the phone plan! I don't know what I'd do if I had to pay for long distance. :)

I got that impression by what you said, but when I was discussing this thread with my colleague he asked if you could burn a program to CD and put it on the infected computer to aid in the recovery. I'm just making sure we have all the info we can get so we can just go when she gets that new ROM. :)

Okay...post when you're ready. :)

I just want to say thank you for all the help you offered for this problem - it was very much appreciated

I spoke to my friend yesterday, and while she was waiting for her cd drive to be delivered her ex somehow figured out how to get recovery to run on her pc. Needless to say she lost everything but the good news is her computer has been reformatted and is clean!

So, I guess this topic can be considered closed now and thanks again for the help :)
