Hello
I've had this message on my background for about 2 weeks.

A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36.
Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c
System can not function in normal mode.
Please check you security settings.
Scan your PC with any available antivirus/spyware remover program to fix the problem.

Mcaffe, Spyhunter, & Spybot did not get rid of.
I tried following your website's instructions (topic: How to remove smitfraud....) but did not find any of the file names (at least not exactly) in my hijackthis log.
Any help you could provide would be appreciated. This is driving me crazy!

Here is my log:

Welcome Wamp to Bleeping Computer.

Download and run this online virus scan:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

***

Next go to this website http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
and do the online scan for trojans, telling it to fix whatever is found.

***

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

***

This will likely be a few step process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

***

Open HijackThis.
Go to ‘config’
Go to ‘misc tools’
Press the button ‘open uninstall manager’
In the list find:
WareOut
Press ‘delete this entry’.
Close HijackThis.

***

You have a nasty CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download SpSeHjfix Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

***

Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:SpSeHjfix)

***

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

***

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
***

Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
***

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

***

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

***

Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

***

Find and doubleclick the file cleanup.

Go to option
Select ‘custom’
Put a check to:* Cookies
* Prefetch
* Temp
* All users.
Press 'cleanup!'

Once it's done, log off and log on again. This will remove files that were in use during the scan.

***

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesn't work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

***

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

thanks g2i2r4. I tried following your instructions as closely as possible and still have this virus. here are results of your steps:

1. you said to open hijack this and remove file WareOut.
This entry was not found in the list and therefore not removed.

2. you said i had a coolweb infection
I ran aboutbuster fine. I ran cwshredder and it did not find a coolweb infection. spsehjfix opens but when i click "start disinfection" nothing happens...program does not seem to run. Then I ran cleanup. I followed all directions except "prefetch" was greyed out so I couldn't check that selection.
I ran kaspersky virus scan...it took forever! Still have smitfraud trojan message on my desktop and my computer is running really slow.

3. so I gathered a new hijackthis log today and will post below.
Thanks again for any and all help you can provide! I really appreciate it.

Oh one other thing....at every startup I get an error message that says
"C:\Windows\CFGMGR51.DLL is missing"
I don't know what this file is or what it is needed for. Please let me know if you know what to do for this.

Here is lastest hijackthis log. Thanks! :

Oke, thanks for the feedback.

Please read these instructions carefully. You may want to print them. Copy the text to a Notepad file and save it to your desktop! We will need the file later.
Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

***

Reboot the computer to safe mode.

Thanks for the quick response.
I think I did it all as you said.
Now there is no error message about the missing file at reboot so there is some progress!
When I did killbox was I supposed to put in each file seperately before hitting the delete file button? Thats what I did because when I highlighted all and selected paste from clipboard it looked like only the last file name was pasted. I hope I did that right.
Thanks for your help!
So any more ideas for getting rid of smitfraud trojan?

And here is my last hijackthis log:

You did just fine

Please download remv3.

Unzip it to your desktop.

Reboot the computer to safe mode.

Double click remv3.bat and let it run.

It will make a log (c:\log.txt).
Please post the content of that file here in your answer.

I decided to try and run adaware. I think I might have got it. Now my background is just black. What do you think?

The log you sent me still shows one item I would like to remove.

Download: deldomains.
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Should the link above display the text instead of downloading the file, then copy & paste the text into notepad and save the file as DellDomains.inf
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

Open HijackThis.
See if this one is gone now:
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.63.219.181.7

If so, please put a check to it and press Fix checked.

Your log is clean is that one is gone after a reboot.
Please let me know.

I ran deldomains and here is my last hijackthis log.
Please let me know if there is anything else that needs to be fixed.
Any ideas on being able to edit my background color?
Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it...Also as an afterthought of posting all this info over the last few weeks...is it ok to have all this info posted on the internet? Thanks again.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.perfect-search.net/index.html

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
allow the change as Spybot will prompt you to it.
