i have a hp w17e monitor that when you plug it in the screen looks perfect and colorful, after about a min. it will turn dark. (you can still see the screen if you look hard enough). so after it turns dark, you can turn the monitor off and back on and it will look fine again for about a min. then turn black again.

any suggestions?

Thanks

If the monitor is indicating signal (ie it doesn't go into standby mode) and as you say, you can still identify the desktop image by the reflection from ambient light, then the backlight in the monitor is shutting off. This could be caused by a faulty backlight lamp, or an inverter fault. Either way, you'll need to get the monitor repaired, if it's out of its warranty period you'll need to consider if it's justified or whether it's better economics to put the likely repair cost towards a replacement monitor.

Example of possible replacement cost:

I can't say for HP, but some companies will extend leniency if you approach them cordially and explain your disappointment at having their otherwise fine product fail only just out of warranty. It could be worth a try.
