I have IE 7 with Windows Service Pack 3. Recently I've received the message: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library has encountered a runtime error with Program:C/ProgramFiles/InternetExplorer/iexplore.exe and the program closes. I've tried Mozilla Firefox and I receive a similar error and sometimes Firefox won't even come up. I tried disabling and enabling add-ons one at a time, but nothing seems to work. The error message doesn't appear on certain websites or as soon as I open IE. It occurs at random times and when I try to re-open IE, the message appears again. It works fine after I restart my computer. Please, if anyone can help. It's very annoying!

Howdy, my name is Hoov, and I will be helping you with your dilemma. I appologize for the delay in getting you help.

Please make sure you watch this thread for responses. If you click the options tab at the top of your first post, you can select to track this thread.

Here is what I am asking you to do during the repair of your computer

*Tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

*Please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

*Follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go. Don't install anything, even other programs that have nothing to do with security or malware, it could cause things to change, and I would never know it.

*Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

*Stick with me to the end. My aim is to fix your problems, and give you the tools and knowledge to keep this from happening again.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform FULL Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

It has been a while since you posted your log, if you still want help could you please post a new one?

The exact message is:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime error!
Program: C\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I have removed my Google toolbar and started IE without any add-ons and then gradually enabled each. The error message appears with Internet Explorer and Firefox. I updated Ad Aware on my computer a couple of days ago. I can't download the programs you mentioned b/c I'm not able to download any .exe files. I don't know what to do about that either.

Lets work on the runtime error first. When you get the popup is there an error code in the windows. Something like R6034?

OK, try to run an online virus scan called Kaspersky from HERE.1. At the main page. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
2. At the next window Select Update. Allow the Database to update.
Note: If prompted to run or update your Java, then follow the prompts to do so. Kaspersky requires Java to run.
3. Once the Database has finished, under the Scan icon Select My Computer to start the scan. The scan may take a few minutes to complete.
4. Select Scan Report.
5. If any threats were found they will appear in the report
6. Select "Save error report as"

The Kaspersky online scanner won't update on my computer. The other malware program does nothing when I open the page.

Try downloading and using Apples' Safari browser I am pretty certain that it won't use anything from MS to run, so you should be able to go to those sites and run the scans, and allow you to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Smack me in the head, you can't get exe files. Can you download anything? Or do you have access to another computer where you can get it?

I can't download anything. I tried downloading it from another computer onto a flash drive, but it wouldn't install on my computer.

So we can't get anything new onto your computer. Do you remember when this started happening?

I started having trouble downloading some files around August 2008, but over the last couple of months I haven't been able to download anything on my PC and my laptop. It started with large program files, but now I can't even download small files. I have somewhat better luck with the laptop, but not much. When I click to download file, the screen freezes and I have to restart my computer. I only have trouble with .exe files.

If you burn programs to CD, will they install?

It will only install if it is a manufactured cd. When I purchased Microsoft Office Home & Student online, they had to send me a cd so I could install it.

Try rebooting to safe mode with networking, and running ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Also make sure you close all your browsers just before the instructions tell you to start the scanner.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Print out the instructions and then reboot to safe mode with networking, then download combofix and install it and run it in safe mode. If you still can't download it, then use another computer to download it, burn it to a CD or put it on a thumbdrive, and try installing from their while the computer is in safe mode. If you can get it to install run it in safe mode.

I couldn't run it in safe mode even though I disabled all anti-virus software and other malware programs. I'm ready to give up.
