Antivirus Sites not responding

I apologize for the cross-posting; when I posted the first part of this, I didn't have a HJT log, so I posted it elsewhere.

1) http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ When I tried to run the online Housecall antivirus, it tells me to wait until it loads "in the window above". But nothing is loading.

2) http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ When I click the Scan Now button, nothing happens. A new window is supposed to open.

3) http://security.symantec.com I tried to run the Virus Detection, but I get the message "In order to run Virus Detection you must be using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher with ActiveX and Scripting enabled." But I checked, and they are enabled.

4) http://www.windowsupdate.com I get the error "Error number: 0x800A01B6 Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page."

I have Windows XP and tried both IE and Mozilla Firefox. My computer told me this morning that it had automatically installed an update and rebooted, but I didn't notice if the update was for Windows, Dell, Norton, or something else.

I've run Spybot, AdAware, a Norton virus scan in the last few days, and a PC-Cillin scan.

Those are all things I put in my Startup folder because I like having them available. SYSMETER is an onscreen memory monitor; the rest are Notepad files (except "FixFirefox.bat". I can't find it in the specified file, but it sounds like something I made up to help me when Firefox crashed. It's probably harmless.)

Hi shawnvw. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

We need to disable TeaTimer so it does not interfere with the fixes we are about to do.
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options>Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: BHOmodObj Class - {7F6828CA-9E42-462C-BC60-418C8144012C} - c:\windows\system\BHOmod.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #3

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):c:\windows\system\BHOmod.dll
Step #4

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #5

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
If the above cannot run then run this java scanner:Trendmicro Java virus scan
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #6

AdAware SE

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘Finish’
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
Step #7

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

I wasn't able to run any of the online scans, not even the Java scanner. (The window that's supposed to show a check or an "X" shows neither. I tried clicking the Install button but, like the Housecall page, it shows no evidence of downloading or running.)

I have PC-Cillin installed. Should I run that again?

Hi shawnvw. If it was a setitngs issue with IE then you should have gotten an message telling you that your ActiveX was set to deny or some such thing.

Let try an IE reinstall.

  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Now open Windows explorer and go to c:\windows\inf. Locaate the ie.inf file and right-click on it. Choose Install from the menu and let it perform an installation. When it is complete go to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates.

Now see if your IE is back to normal. Post a new HijackThis log back here and I will review it when it comes in.

I hate to be a bother, but reinstalling IE is giving me problems. Basically, when I run "install" it asks for the "CD" where the SP2 version of IE is. I got SP2 from a download, not a CD, and I don't know where the files are. (I thought I found the right folder, but halfway through the installaiton, the installer asks for files that aren't in there.)

What can I do?



Incidetnally, I thought I had disabled Spybot's Resident like you said, but it seems to still run as an add-on in IE. Does that change anything?

And I'm still getting the error at the Windows Update site: "Error number: 0x800A01B6 Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page."

When XP is installed it creates a folder named i386 in teh windows folder with the installation files in it. Point the installer to that folder and see if it finds what it needs.

The problems with Windows Update is probably directly related to the problems with IE.

Actually, I tried that: It's asking for "C:\WINDOWS\INF\i386" but there's no such folder. There is a "C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386" , but that's what gives me the aforementioned problem, requests for nonexistant files.

(PS: My donation may take a few days to clear. I hope we fix this before then!)
