I used a post from "Grinler" to remove the "startsearches" mess from my PC. THANK YOU! Now my daughter has something called Aurora that is a popup nightmare. She also seems to have a lot of unecessary toolbars as well. Here is the hijackthis Log. Any help is certainly appreciated.

Hello jonknite and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can hide malware from us when we are performing a fix, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on Start, then Run, and type msconfig and then press Enter. When the window opens you should be on the General tab. Click on the Normal Startup item. Then press ok until you are out of the program. It will ask you to reboot so reboot normally.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it here as a reply. I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Hi John. Thanks for the new log. After reviewing it I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download and install ewido security suite. Update the program and then close it. Do not run it yet.

Download nailfix.zip and unzip it to its own folder.

Step #2

Now we need to remove some services.

Part 1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the ll_reg service and click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Repeat the above steps for the following services:
    • NetMeeting Remote Desktop (RPC) Sharing
      Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extension
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste each line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key after each one:
    • sc delete ll_reg
sc delete NetMeeting Remote Desktop (RPC) Sharing
sc delete Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extension
  • Close the Command Prompt window
Step #3

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #4

Navigate to the folder you unzipped nailfix.zip into and double-click on nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Step #5

Start ewido and click on the Scanner button. On the Scanner page click on My Computer and then click the Start button to begin the scan. Let it run to completion and fix anything that it finds.

Step #6

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #7

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\soabg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\fash.exe
C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinGate.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinHelp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\IEXPLORE.EXE
c:\windows\system32\rkvyos.exe
C:\Program Files\TV Media\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\ <--folder

Now search for these files and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.reg678.dll
Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

OT,

First off, Aurora is gone! Is there a donate button for Paypal for this site? I can't thank you folks enough, keep up the good work (though I imagine you enjoy it anyways!)

Problems encountered:

The following two files couldn't be deleted in the DOS window, it said they couldn't be found. I used copy/paste, even tried cd:\ and tried from the root directory.

sc delete NetMeeting Remote Desktop (RPC) Sharing
sc delete Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extension

Ewido stopped on an archive file C:\Windows\system32\psis80ex.ax it said it was an archive file and couldn't be cleaned, did I want to delete it, delete all or ignore? I said delete and the program crashed. Restarted scan and it stopped at the same file so I said ignore and it crashed again. I went into explorer and deleted it manually and restarted the scan. This time it stopped at a file called dc1.ax with the same message, I clicked delete all and the program finished immediately and issued it's report even though it was in the 70% range. Perhaps I should rerun it again? Safe mode or standard?

I went ahead and did the hijackthis anyways. Several of the 04 - HKLM files weren't in the list so I am assuming Ewido did that?

the file reg678.dll wasn't there (I did set the file folder options correctly)

At any rate here is my new log:

My wife's computer is next, it has the lovgate virus among other things, should I start a new thread for that? Also I'm beginning to doubt whether the $40 a year I spend for McAfee is worth it, what would you recommend going forward?

Hi Hohan. the log looks great. Good job! I am a little concerned with the files ewido could not delete so let's do this.

Start ewido and perform an update. Install any available.

Now close ewido and boot into Safe Mode by:

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
InSafe Mode start ewido and do a complete scan. When finished, reboot normally and post the ewido log back here.

Cheers.

OT
