Strike that. Didn't realize there was a space in the file name. Now, however, I get a message saying that "files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache". Then it says to "insert your windows xp professional service pack 3 cd now".

I don't have that. I only have the one disc that came with my computer.

Help!

hey rfearo

To use sfc without the windows xp disc, you will have to use some slightly more complicated procedures.
Please follow the instructions is this post.

In that post start at "To fix the problem when you only have a restore CD". Read how to deal with that problem.

This is a slightly difficult way of doing it, and as there is registry editing more harm can be done than what the original problem is.

May I ask why you wish to do a sfc?

I needed SP3 and it wasn't on this disc, but I got it elsewhere. The reason why I want to do a SFC is because I was invaded by viruses last week and I finally got my computer clean (I think) but it has been running strangely ever since. Someone steered me in this direction as a fix.

Then i suggest you look at the part of the link I gave you.

If SFC does not work, you may have to do the alternative that was presented

Do you agree with the prognosis?

If it is not working properly, sfc is usually a good way to go, however not at the expense of messing up your computer some more. If you are willing to take the risk, please go ahead and do what the above link requires you to do.

However the alternative will also probably be a good idea, which was probably a repair install.

The SFC is over halfway done now, so I think that is a good sign. Or am I wrong?

SFC.EXE replaces any corrupted files that are "protected" by using one's in the dllcache or from the CD.
There won't be any notice when the scan finishes - it'll just close.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
