XP SP2
SpywareBlaster
Spybot S&D/res
Ad-Aware SE
Microsoft AntiSpy
NIS2005
presario I386 desktop

here i am again. needing bc's advice and guidance.

last two days my wife and i noticed the pc doesn't feel right. seems slower. a lotta little stuff is happening. IE boggs down and crashes (from top to bottom), desk top icons dissappear and then reappear. when we watch a clip on HGTV.com, windows media player comes up, IE crashes (as stated above), and system trey hidden icon button is gone, along with some icons. i close media player and IE just appears and functions but sys trey is still wierd.

when playing games on Yahoo, w/o active x, sounds go away, things get slow. i back out of game and reload, but no change.

im getting spam in email that i haven't seen in a month. obvious spam thats normally blocked.

zero pos on all security programs, save one. spybot hit on backweb lite, and has been doing so since a def dl about a week ago. the hit doesn't have the usual pre check in the box for backweb lite. spybot sez if i dont use the back web, dont be concerned. so i haven't removed the entry.
i have defragged the pc.

my wife signed up for msn msgr two weeks ago(dont know if that uses back web).

rebooted after an update w/NIS 2005 and now i get this;

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needed to close.

szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : unknown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER386f.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER386f.dir00\appcompat.txt

the last straw..........

we leave the pc on all day. dont know if the win 32 error is a result of NIS or not.

to be honest, i dont know sh...t. its p...sing me off (sorry).

can you feel a change in a pc?

mostly the pc is ok. all these things don't happen all the time. i can't put my finger on whats going on.

would appreciate some input from bc's wise members,

always learning and completely befuddled, and would like to be un-fuddled,

ty ty ty,

hello there, not to sure of your problem. Perhaps if you post a HJT log and maybe even an fport scan someone here can surely help.

ty Lucent,

i checked NIS last def dl and it was a firewall update so i think the gen host problem will have to be addressed with them.

i did post to hjt forum as sugested.

i dont want to use two forums for same problems. not a good thing. i'll wait for answer there and leave this alone till they say im good to go and return here for any windows problems.

ty, igo

Hi igonuts2,

There are many user dealing with the same problem you are seeing.

Here is what I have discovered...

The error you are experiencing is related to hardware, but is not always the same piece of hardware for every user. Many users have cured this problem by installing their printer, and reinstalling it using updated drivers. USB cameras, or other USB devices may also be causing the error. So...

Concentrate on USB devices, and then one at a time replace the drivers for each. Replace those for your printer, or camera first, and then follow through with the others.

If that doesn't do it, you may wish to extend the replacements to your other components. Even though this maybe lots of work, the good thing is your computer will be in better shape with the updated drivers.

Good luck with the replacements,

Rigel

Microsoft has now released a fix for this problem...

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=894391

Select the version of Windows and download/install the patch.

Thanks,

Rigel

ty rigelslight!

all problems attributed to corrupt Symantec fire wall update.

solution;
deletion of "live update" files in downloaded files folder.
and reconnecting with "live update".

this thread can now be closed
