Spybot detects and removes Trojans but they re-appear. Windows Explorer crashes. Windows automatic update service is disabled - not possible to enable or start service. Windows update fails.

Hello, fistoffury

Welcome to the Bleeping Computer Forums. My name is Jat, and I will be helping you with your situation.

If you do not make a reply in 5 days, we will have to close your topic.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favourites. Alternatively, you can click the Posted Image button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic. The topics you are tracking can be found here.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just post back here so that we know you're still here.

I need some time to look over your log, I will post back soon.

MBAM

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Hi Jat

Thanks for your help. Logs posted below. The system seems to be running much better now. Not sure if there are still some strange BHOs though? Should I try to run windows update again now? Also, can you recommend some security software to prevent further problems (McAfee Security Center is installed but still managed to get infected)?

Thanks again.

Hello,

Thanks for your help. Logs posted below. The system seems to be running much better now. Not sure if there are still some strange BHOs though? Should I try to run windows update again now? Also, can you recommend some security software to prevent further problems (McAfee Security Center is installed but still managed to get infected)?

No problem, we are happy to help  There are still some bad files left over (yes one of them is a BHO), run Windows Update after your system is totally clean but not yet. I don't think there's a single AV that can protect you 100%, there will always be a chance of infection with any AV you have. Every AV has its pro's and con's but thats an arguement which can go on for years, the choice is yours. However don't do anything while your infected, shutting down your protection even temporarily right now is a bad idea. Although I can understand if your not satisfied with your AV, here are some free alternatives: (I currently use Avast) - remember if your going to change your AV, do so after your PC is cleanComboFix

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations (if you already have ComboFix, then delete it and download again) :

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. See this topic to find out how to disable your antivirus and firewall (post #1 and #2).
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

NOTE**ComboFix was intended to be used under the supervision of a helper, not for general use. This is a powerful tool which can permanently damage your computer.

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

ReScan

Please rescan with DDS and post DDS.txt

In your next reply, please post:
  • ComboFix log
  • DDS logs

Hello, still got some files remaining, but not many

CFScript

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\Tasks\sdipifna.job

DDS::
BHO: {61EA7143-48AE-4120-9656-5CE29796B318} -
BHO: {6D794CB4-C7CD-4c6f-BFDC-9B77AFBDC02C} -
BHO: {9457E0E8-80F4-4FAD-922C-52E1DB722082} -
AppInit_DLLs: yqwxaj.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

MBAM - Full Scan
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click the tab that says "Update". Choose the mirror Malwarebytes.org and then press Check for Updates. You will be notified of an update.
Go back to the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.

ReScan

Please rescan with DDS and post DDS.txt

In your next reply, please post:
  • ComboFix log
  • MBAM log
  • DDS logs

Hello,

looks like we missed one file:

Please go to My Computer
Double click on Local Disk (C:)
find a file called beefs.exe--Note: you will only see ".exe" if you have the file extensions option enabled.
Delete that file and Empty your recycle bin.

We should perform another online scan:

BitDefender Scan

Please run a BitDefender Online Scan
  • Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  • Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.

Hello,

The files found by Bitdefender were located in OTMoveIt's quarantine folder and the System Volume Information directory (created when you make a restore point) These issues are resolved by following the following steps.

You are now clean!

We should tidy up our mess though.

Uninstall ComboFix
  • Go to Start, then click Run
  • In the box, type: Combofix /u
  • Press Enter or click ok, and ComboFix will uninstall. Refer to the picture below if unsure.

OTCleanIt
  • Please download OTCleanIt from one of the following mirrors and save it to your desktop:
  • Double click the Posted Image icon.
  • Push the large "Cleanup!" button.
  • Allow your system to reboot.
Other Deletions

Locate where you saved DDS.exe, right click the file and select Delete.

Take a read of this excellent tutorial:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

System still slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

Disable and Enable System Restore.

You should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point. You should now create a new restore point, since your system is clean.

You can find instructions on how to disable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently
  • It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
  • This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  • If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Next, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs, and the updating of them regularly

Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy- Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
  • This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
  • You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.
  • A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
  • Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
Install SUPERAntiSpyware - Install and download SUPERAntiSpyware.
  • You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot.
  • Information on installing & using this product can be found here:
  • Click here for more info -->SUPERAntiSpyware official site
Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster
  • SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
  • Download it here
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Glad I could Help :)
