Hello lspecski.

You have a nasty nail.exe infection. We will use this fix to remove it.

C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\O5O16HSF\hijackthis[1]\HijackThis.exe

Before you do anything with Hijackthis, you need to put it into its own folder, but not a temp folder. It won't save the backups if it is run from a temporary folder.

Here is how to make a Hijackthis folder:

Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your hijackthis.exe there.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/nailfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan.
Post the log from the scan here for me.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, and the Ewido scan log.

Do you know what the program strings.exe does or did you install it?

You have a suspicious file we need to check. The file is strings.exe,
You will have to search for it to find the complete path and plug the entire path into Jotti Scan. The file is probably in C:\WINDOWS\System32\ or C:\WINDOWS\

Go to
Jotti's malware scan press the Browse button, and find strings.exe (include the path name) , then upload and scan it.
Let me know the results.
Copy and paste the output to this thread

It should look something like this sample:

File: GoogleToolbarInstaller.exe
Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.)
Packers detected: CEXE

AntiVir No viruses found (0.15 seconds taken)
Avast No viruses found (1.51 seconds taken)
BitDefender No viruses found (0.97 seconds taken)
ClamAV No viruses found (0.39 seconds taken)
Dr.Web No viruses found (0.52 seconds taken)
