"System is infected" pop-ups from system tray

Hello there and thank you in advance for your help. I read the "new post" topic but, because of the state of my computer, I can't run DDS; I'm no longer able to login, even in safe mode. I did manage to run HijackThis in standard more before I could no longer login. So I'm posting that log instead of the DDS log. My apologies for that.

The infected system has been showing random pop-ups, both pop-up browser windows and alerts from the system tray, both prompting me to download some AV software to remove the threat. I also found some new icons on my desktop pointing to some pr0n sites. Now, as soon as I login, I get a flash of the desktop and then am logged out back to the login screen. This is on Windows XP Home.

Hello kj123 :thumbsup: Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest to you while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.


In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed. I will need for you to reply to this post to confirm you still are seeking help.


I also need to know if you have either a flash drive or CD that we can transfer programs with?

I also need to know if you have any tools already on the infected machine? Things such as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware that you may have already tried to use to clear up the infection.

Thank you for the reply. I won’t be running anything else on the infected computer unless suggested. The infected computer has both a CD drive and available USB ports for a flash drive. And I have a flash drive available to copy programs. I have Norton Antivirus and that's pretty much it.

Let's do the following.




Using the flash drive please download the following programs and transfer them to your computer: Here are some instructions in case you need them:
Using Flash Drive
  • Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malwareand save it to your desktop when you transfer it over to the infected machine

  • Download LSPFix and save to your desktop when you transfer it over.

    Download the uncompressed version.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop also when you transfer it over.
If you cannot be where you can read these instructions as you use the tools then print this out along with the Tutorial page which is linked in the LSP-Fix.



The first thing we want to do after you get all of the programs installed is to follow the instructions below for MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you check the following:
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.






There is a good chance that you will not be able to find the ntdll64.dll file I have listed below because MBAM may do the work first. If you can't find it don't let it concern you.

Perform the following with LSP-Fix:
  • Open the lspfix folder and double-click on LSPFix.exe to start the program.
  • Check the "I know what I am doing" checkbox.
  • Select (highlight) all instances of ntdll64.dll in the left column under "Keep".
  • Click the arrow >> so it goes over to the right column under "Remove".
  • Click "Finish" and LSPfix will remove references to the file and restore the chain numbers.
For instructions with screen shots, see the "Using LSP-Fix Tutorial".





Even if you do not reestablish Internet connection through the above steps run the following:
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
When the above is completed please post the following:
  • MBAM log
  • RSIT logs(both log.txt and info.txt)
  • Let me know if things have improved. If you have Internet connection but still are having other problems please advise me of that also.

Yes, thanks, I was just able to get to the computer today.

Unfortunately, I can't even get the computer on. It boots up, but the computer just logs on and off immediately. There doesn't seem to be a way to get these onto the infected computer. Any last thoughts before I erase everything and start over? Much thanks.

Let me make sure I understand the problem correctly. Can you boot up OK, but the problem happens when you try to log in to your account or is it that the computer boots up and then immediately turns back off.

The other thing is if it is the first thing and you have another user account on the computer have you tried to log into it?

so it boots up, briefly shows our desktop (no icons), then goes to the login screen. If you click the login screen, it starts the login process then immediately logs out. If you try to do it in safe mode, then for either our account or the administrator account (it's our home pc, but it has both) do the same thing. It doesn't turn itself off, but there doesn't seem to be a way in. Much thanks for all your help.

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?

Do it the same way you get into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key but don't select Safe Mode, select Last Known Good Configuration instead and see if that is any help if you haven't already tried it.

Unfortunately, that doesn't do anything either. Same thing happens, it boots up, goes briefly to our desktop (again, not showing icons or anything) then goes to the login screen. Click on login, it immediately logs off again.

You've been very helpful. I assume at this point our only hope is to try and pull off any files we can without booting up, and erasing everything and starting again? Much thanks.

Reformatting seems to be the best option here. You can slave your hard drive to another computer and back-up your data but be aware that there is a chance you can transfer infected files. The same holds true when you save files and folders by other means. Try to be very careful in what you save and if you do place them back on your reformatted machine I would immediately start checking for infections with my anti-virus and run some on-line scans like Kaspersky.
