Posted 06 January 2009 - 10:01 PM

My daughters machine began bogging down and my wife installed McAfee for her this weekend. Things went bad fast after that, I'd guess either a rogue browser link or permission request was clicked.

At this point the symptoms were:
- hijacked desktop background, an "alert" box flashing a virus warning
- red circle/white cross icon in system tray w/ popup dialog
- persistent opening of firefox (version was not 3.0.5 at that time) approx. every 2 minutes, or if tray icon/dialog clicked
- Task Manager disabled
- performance slowed to a near standstill (its an old box anyway, but REALLY bogged down)

Where I am at this point:
- used RegEdit to re-enable Task Manager, stopped frmwrk.exe which removed the tray icon, improved performance, and greatly reduced the number of firefox popups
- Burned all critical user documents to DVD
- downloaded latest firefox which identified 3 unknown add-ons during install (Oberon, Yo Yo, Sotfone)
- at some point during this install, desktop changed to an active desktop recovery page with link to "Restore my Active Desktop"
- Insured that Microsoft Firewall is active and logging (it was not)
- I also checked the McAfee log from my wife's initial attempt, 2 files were identified as not fixed
- jkkJabaw.dll
- xhalodohvjeh.dll

I've become quite paranoid while researching this, since the purveyors of this particularly pernicious piece of... are attempting to make people seek out antivirus solutions and directing them to rogue sites which do more harm.
The browser popups were mainly for www.real-av.org pages that luckily I was warned away from in a forum post, but I was quite surprised when my search terms: download+latest+firefox returned a sponsored link to a mozilla spoof - BEWARE!

Anyway, I'm obviously in over my head... glad to find this site.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hello Kahunamek and welcome to Bleeping Computer,

1. Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop.
  • Select "2. Fix Goored" by typing 2 and pressing Enter.
  • Make sure all instances of Firefox are closed at this point.
  • Type y at the prompt and press Enter again.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt).
Note: If you receive a message saying that GooredFix needs your system to be restarted, please close all applications and reboot your system. Please also allow any registry changes that may be prompted by any of your security programs.

2. Please download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Thank you Thunder, it seems this is hitting a lot of people right now.

I had some problems:
- I left the computer on and automatic updates installed some MS patches since my first post (sorry, shoulda thought to turn that off)
- after the required reboot, I started getting pop-ups, but now in iExplorer rather than Firefox. Also the background was now black, but I have a transparent floating notice (it's on top of my trash) located above the system tray. It says "you may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This copy of windows did not pass Windows validation." there is also a blue box with a star logo that says "ask for genuine Microsoft Software"
- the same star logo appears in my system tray, and has four selections available with (online) following them. I don't know if this is legitimate Microsoft or not (maybe from the update), but I assure you I have a good OEM install with certificate.

as for the scans:
- I got a popup just as I started gooredfix, so ran it again...then realized I overwrite the first log, here is the log I have.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I ran combofix next, my machine powered down at one point as if restarting, then as it powered back up it died ( as if unplugged while running ) when I hard rebooted it I got a Microsoft "send error report?" dialog referencing these 2 files:

F:\DOCUME~1\Nicole\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb3cb.dir00\Mini010709-01.dmp
F:\DOCUME~1\Nicole\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb3cb.dir00\sysdata.xml

I checked c:\ for a log and found none so ran it again, successfully this time...discovering that it saved to f:\ (didn't think to look there so again, may have overwritten anything written from the first attempt.

Finally, when I opened Firefox after the reboot, it informed me that an add-on had been added...no idea which as I had not looked at them before and nothing seems unusual.

sorry if this complicates things further, anyway here's the combofix.txt

So as it stands since running combofix, I'm still getting pop-ups, in iExplorer. some instances have crashed requesting a "send error report?" referencing F:\DOCUME~1\Nicole\LOCALS~1\Temp\a866_appcompat.txt. And I still need to find out if I need to contact Microsoft about validation or if that is a bogus notification.

Again, many thanks for the help.

I forgot to mention that I DID disable the wireless network connection after sending my last post (I am now using my own machine), and set automatic updates to off. Hopefully this will prevent any further complications.

Thank You again, very much.

Hello Kmek,

the same star logo appears in my system tray, and has four selections available with (online) following them. I don't know if this is legitimate Microsoft or not (maybe from the update), but I assure you I have a good OEM install with certificate.

That is indeed the legitimate Windows validation warning,
somehow updating made your system also fail the validation test.

Did you disable Spyware Doctor prior to running ComboFix ?

Let's clean up some more :

Open Notepad - don't use any other texteditor than Notepad or the script will fail !
Copy/paste the bold, blue text below into an empty notepad window:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/192971/vundo-frmwrk32exe-infection/

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. Upon reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of the Combofix log in your next reply, as well as a fresh HijackThislog.

In the C:\Qoobox\ folder, you'll find the CF-Submit.htm file, double click it (opens browser window) and
click OK to open the upload page,
copy the path description (printed in fat) on this page, and paste it in the search field.
Click Send File. :) .

Are you still having problems ?

Combofix ran smooth, although it did request permission to update to a newer version when I ran it.

No sign of any problems now. I ran msconfig and there are no unusual startups, I have control of the desktop background, etc. all seems well. There are two win.ini entries that I question: "hkjhk" and "hkjhkW", but the machine seems to be running perfectly (for one it's age, anyway).

I submitted the file: [9]Submit@Date_Time.zip manually via the link you provided. Qoobox was located on my F:\ drive and there was no .htm file there, and I provided a link to this thread and a description of why I submitted this way for them as well.

You've done a great job helping me with this and I really appreciate it. Unless the logs or those win.ini entries indicate that something else is needed, I consider this a success.

I can only hope that Microsoft will be 1/10th as helpful as you have been in resolving my validation issue, but I wont open that can of worms until your next (and hopefully final) post.

Thank you again, you do good work.
-Kmek

Hello Kmek,

Looking good now.

You can remove all used tools and folders created in the process.
To remove ComboFix :
Go to Start > Run, and copy and paste next command in the field:ComboFix /u
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /u
Then press Enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, restore your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

No more issues ?

Greetings,
Thunder

Glad we could help, Kmek

Please read this Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks.
To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place
and/or Grinlers tutorial on how malware is hidden and installed
