Last night I became infected with what appears to be several different nasty files. They have been causing myriad problems. Looking at my task manager, it appears the problem files are spywareguard.exe and prunnet.exe.

I am running Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. I have been running AVG Free as my only virus protection.

Last night while surfing some regular websites (ESPN, Yahoo, Rotten Tomatoes etc), AVG popped up a window saying there was a harmful intrusion coming through and asked if I wanted to stop it. I said yes. (In retrospect, I think maybe clicking yes was what allowed it get in?) AVG then said the attempt to block the attack was unsuccessful.

A window popped up briefly. Ever since, I have frequent pop-ups of "Spyware Guard 2008" as well as a bogus Windows Security. Spyware Guard performs a "scan" and tells me I have a bunch of viruses and that I should purchase the full version. This has rendered the PC nearly useless.

I attempted to use System Restore, although it appears that the malware has made that inoperable. I am unable to restart or shut down the computer normally. I can only manually shutdown. My System Properties information is messed up as well. It says the computer is "Register to: 76487-OEM-0011903-00803" and "Computer: (blank)" instead of what it used to.

Through Task Manager, I have tried shutting down the malware, but the moment I open MS Internet Explorer, they re-open.

I tried running a full, slow scan with AVG to remove the problem. AVG finds some of the problems, but, as I cannot restart, nothing is accomplished.

I have disconnected the computer from my router (and thus the Internet). I am typing with post on a different computer.

Please help. Thanks in advance.

Please go onto the computer at risk, and get internet access back.

Then follow the instructions below

Please download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Ensure that your computer is connected to the internet and your software firewall is disabled until instructed to re-enable it.
Double click on the mbam-setup.exe to begin the installation process.
When the installation begins, please do not change any of the settings and follow the prompts.
Please make sure that when you finish the installation, these options remain checked;
*Update MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
*Launch MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
You may now click finish...
When MBAM launches, you will be prompted to update before running a scan. If an update is found, MBAM will automatically download and apply the updates and you can then click 'OK' button to close the box and continue. You may now re-enable your firewall
Please ensure that while you are on the scanner tab the 'Perform Quick Scan' option is selected, then click the 'Scan' button.
If you are asked which drives to scan, please leave all of them ticked, and click 'Start Scan'.
The scan will now begin and you will see “Scan in progress” at the top; It may take a while to complete so please be patient.
When the scan completes, you will see “The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found”
Click the 'OK' button to close the box and continue with the removal process.
Back on the main scanner screen, click 'Show Results' to see a list of any found Malware.
Ensure that all items are checked and then click the 'Remove Selected' button.
When the removal process is complete, a log will open in notepad; this log will be automatically saved and you can view it in the logs section of the program.
Copy and paste the contents of the log file that is open into your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the Malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.
Please PM me if i have been assisting you and do not reply for 24 hours!

So far, so good. After restart, Spyware Guard does not appear on my desktop or system tray as it did before. It has not popped up yet either.

Perfect. Please reboot and then do a full scan to remove any more existing threats

a new log after the full scan would be good too :flowers:

Also, what steps should I take to avoid this in the future. Obviously, AVG Free didn't cut it in this sort of attack. What would you suggest I use to prevent infection, to remove spyware, etc.?

I would suggest you download Spyware Terminator and enable the real-time protection on that. It is just as good if not better than a commercial product.
I would then suggest Avira Antivir which is pretty nice.
