cant seem to run safe mode

Please someone help me!!! i know i have some probs with my pc... i renewed my bullguard last week but it wont work, have contacted them and they have advised me to start mypc windows xp in safe mode with networking..

i startt my pc and keep pressing F8 and no option comes up from ther the text is

"please selct boot service

1st floppy drive

pm-sony dvd rx dw-Q12OA

3M-MAXTOR 6V25OFO"

so no sign of safe mode options.... any ideas please?? please note that i do not have the best pc knowledge so if you could explin in some detail then that wuold be great

i have tried holding it down and pressing every 1/2 second both get me the same screen.. what am i doing worng?
