I have been getting a pop up Internet Explorer window which displays a "504 Gateway time-out nginx" though I have not initiated Internet Explorer. Assuming some malware/adware. Most of the hits I get on a search for this discuss what a timeout is...I get that...doesn't help since I didn't start IE. I recently restored the computer with antivir rescue. It did indicate some problems with Internet Explorer and Microsoft works. Can I uninstall these apps? Think I tried uninstalling IE once and XP doesn't like that. I have run AVG, Malwarebytes. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

nginx is some kind of http mail proxy.
Go into your internet settings in IE and check the way it connects to the internet and make sure there is no proxy set.
I cant guide you because i haven't used IE since 02

Good luck
