Hi,

I have a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium.

All of a sudden, when I try to boot the laptop I get the following:

1. HP Splash Screen
2. Windows Splash Scrren, however all you see is the bar at the bottom and Microsoft Corp. The logo does not show.
3. A black screen with the mouse arrow which you can move.

You cannot boot in safe mode either. You will get the same result.

I have run all of the built in diagnostics and none find any issues.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Did you run Startup Repair? http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/repair-windows-with-windows-startup-repair/
Have you run a hard drive diagnostic?

Yes I did both. Startup Repair said it could not find anything to fix the problem. If it continues to contact the system admin.

Neither changed anything.

If Startup Repair and the disk diagnostic didn't find an issue - then it's most likely that there's a problem with a driver that loads both in normal and Safe Modes.

Can you get to the Safe Mode boot screen? If so, you can select the bootlogging option and then try to boot.
Then open the bootlog file (in the Windows Recovery Environment) and see what failed to load.
Then use regedit to disable that service in the registry

This is from this link: http://blogs.msdn.com/winre/

As I haven't done any of this before, we'll have to work through it step-by-step. The first step would be to enable bootlogging, attempt to boot (and let it fail), then boot to the RE...Command Prompt and read the \windows\Ntbtlog.txt file. The failed entries "should" be near the end of the file. Let us know what it finds and we can work from there.

I was able to enable bootlogging, but I don't understand how to view the file.

When I enter the RE...Command prompt, it shows "x:\windows\system32>"

I am not really sure what to do at this point.

Thanks.

Like I said, I'm learning this also - so it's gonna take a bit of experimenting.

Try typing this at the command prompt:

type c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt

If I'm correct, this'll spew out the file in text form and you'll be able to view the last lines of the boot log file.
If there's anything about "fail" in there, let us know what it says.

If not, then try this command:

type c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt /p
and you'll be able to press the space bar to advance one page at a time (still looking for any reference to "fail").

I have the log file. I don't see anything that says failed, but a lot say that they were not loaded. And by a lot I mean a lot.

If you want, I can send you the log file but it is too large to attach.

Let me know.

Here's the last 2 boots from the log file I got in my email. I didn't notice anything in particular with them - but I'm interested in some of the earlier entries (more on that later).

The rest of the log consists of entries from 19 Nov 08 up to mid-Dec 08 - with many, many devices not loading (mostly video and LAN/WLAN).

There's no easy way that I can see to fix this from the command prompt BUT...

If you can get at System Restore in the Startup Repair dialog - try restoring to before 19 Nov 08. If that's not available, look for something around 15 Dec 08.

If you can't get at it, try typing rstrui.exe at the Command Prompt to see if it'll launch System Restore.

Have you had Symantec installed all along?

No it is pretty new. But I am pretty sure it did run a few times after it was installed.

Could that be the issue?

Hi dw1256,

It could be. Vista's been out for quite awhile now, so most of the incompatibilities have been worked out. Some of the early problems between Vista and Nortons were file corruption problems that would keep recurring. Vista is complex and Symantec is complex. I don't know if you can uninstall it, but if you come to a point where you don't know what else to do, that would be one option to keep open, if uninstalling things is something you can do. Before you take that step, I would recommend continuing with whatever Usama requests, as he's more knowledgeable than I am. The thought about Symantec just struck me when I looked through your log. See what Usasma has to say about it first.

This is the normal deinstallation instruction:

Uninstalling your Norton products on Windows Vista

This is the removal tool which removes everything related to Symantec. Use the following only if needed.

Norton Removal Tool

I too have noticed a lot of problems with Norton/Symantec products and Vista.
When you run the Norton Removal Tool it should give you the opportunity to preserve your settings/license info.
After doing that I'd suggest uninstalling the Norton/Symantec product to see if that fixes things.

If it does, then either download a fresh copy to install - or go with another antivirus product that doesn't experience these issues.
