Hello,

My computer was recently infected with Virtumonde/Vundo. I believe I have taken the necessary steps to remove the problem. I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and removed the Vundo entries. I then ran VundoFix as a "second opinion" and nothing came up. However, I am still not convinced my computer is back to normal, as my computer takes longer than normal to boot up.

I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware once again after I rebooted, and it found nothing.

Thank you in advance.

Here is my DDS Log:

Hello and  to Bleeping Computer my name is BHowett and I will be helping you to get sorted. If for any reason you do not understand any of the instructions, or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your question, and we will go through it again.

Sorry for the delay, please do the following...

ComboFix

Please ownload ComboFix from Here or Here

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt, and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.

Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please do not PM me asking for support. Post on the forums instead :)
Please be courteous, polite, and say thank you.
Please post the final results, good or bad. We like to know!

Hi rdub,

Not to bad at all, please do the following….

Combofix Script.txt
1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
c:\windows\system32\deploytk.dll
Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\F]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{ed0a0903-4450-11da-86b5-00123fa53317}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{ed0a0904-4450-11da-86b5-00123fa53317}]

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Hi BHowett,

The logs you have requested are below. My computer still takes significantly longer than it did to start up than before it was infected. I realize this doesn't have to be attributed to an infection, however it didn't take this long before it was infected. However, once the computer is booted up, all seems to be normal. I guess I'm just looking for some peace of mind. Again, many thanks to you.

Hi rdub,

Well there is no sign of infection left, just a possible java exploit witch we can fix by updating java, and a few tings in your Symantec AntiVirus quarantine witch you can just empty out.

So please do the following….

Empty out your Symantec AntiVirus quarantine, then:

Update Java
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

===============================================

ComboFix Removal
Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image
===============================================

Rmove Viewpoint

You have Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. These programs are not malware but are considered as foistware instead of malware since they are installed without user's approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove them.

To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.
===============================================

After that let’s take a look at your start up list, and see if we can make any changes to speed up your start up time.

Start up list

Make an start up list using HijackThis
To access the Start up list you would do the following:

1. Open HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Check the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
5. Click on the Generate StartupList log button *NOTE* you may see a StartupList prompt asking if you want to continue click “yes”
6. a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Hi rdub,

I didn’t really see anything in there that looks out of place or that shouldn’t be running, try the following steps and let me know if that helps out.

Cleaning up Hard Drive space:

1) Uninstall anything that's no longer used via Add/Remove Programs.

2) Back-up to disk anything that isn't needed on the hard drive and delete the corresponding files.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

4) You can remove old M$ update uninstallation files to free up some space if you aren't going to uninstall them - http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_remove_hotfix_backup.zip will help automate this process.
This will also delete the logs that are left behind as well - unless you deselect that option.

5) You could reduce the amount of space that System restore claims as it's own and even clean out older Restore Points.

6) DEFRAG THE DRIVE

Rather than the MS defrag, I use the free Auslogics version as it is faster and a tad better

Download link is here along with the running instructions http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download

If you could do that and then let me know how your computer is running.

Hi Bhowett,

The computer continues to be slow during start up. But once it is all booted up, it runs fine. Good point on the defrag, I hadn't defragged in a quite some time. Again, thank you for your help!

Hi rdub,

Well done, your log appears clean  if you still concerned with the start up time you can always post in the tech forums here at Bleeping Computer and see if they have any ideas.

Now lets uninstall Combofix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /u, it needs to be there.
