I have been infected. It appears I have a very virulent strain of the VX2 virus. I may be wrong in this. That is the name showing up on Ad-Aware. The files that are not able to be removed in Ad-Aware and Spybot are:
C:\Windows\System32\Drpmon.dll
C:\Windows\System32\drpmon.dll
So I am coming to you to find out if you can help.
I am running windows XP home and use the windows firewall.
I just ran HijackThis and here is the log from that program:

Hello morlife@earthlink.net and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download and install ewido security suite. Update the program and then close it. Do not run it yet.

Step #2

Download nailfix.zip and unzip it to its own folder.

Step #3

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #4

Navigate to the folder you unzipped nailfix.zip into and double-click on nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Step #5

Start ewido and click on the Scanner button. On the Scanner page click on My Computer and then click the Start button to begin the scan. Let it run to completion and fix anything that it finds.

Step #6

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = websearch.drsnsrch.com/q.cgi?q=
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
O2 - BHO: ohb - {9ADE0443-2AB2-4B23-A3F8-AC520773DE12} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nseBC6.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ejlarwd] c:\windows\system32\eugius.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #7

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nseBC6.dll
C:\Program Files\DeskAd Service\ <--folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iyfwwyqi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netsync.exe
C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe
c:\windows\system32\eugius.exe

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Thank you oldtimer. I went on a fishing trip this weekend right after I posted. I was hoping for a faster response, but am very happy with the fact I got a response.

I followed your instructions except for the part about letting ewido finish it's scan. The computer that is infected is the work computer and the ewido scan was two hours into it and only 50% complete. It appears that I was wrong about VX being the culprit. Anyway I have eliminated the files you suggested and so far so good. Here is the new hijack this text log.

Oh I forgot one thing. The link to nailfix in your post was outdated or incorrect. I was able to find the program at

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/nailfix.zip

Just for your information.

Thanks again.

Hi morlife@earthlink.net. Yes, depending on the size of the hard drive ewido can take some time. The nailfix infection can have a number of additional files which do not show in a HijackThis log so I encourage you to run it and let it finish.

Thanks for the information about the link. I have updated mine as well.

Also, you should contact Grinler and have your username changed. By using your email address you leave yourself vulnerable to net spiders that harvest email addresses for spamming and we highly discourage using them as your username.

Ok, we have a couple of items to fix here so let's get started.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start HijackThis and follow these steps:
  • Click on Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Process Manager button
Find the following items and click on each one to select it and then click on the Kill Process button to stop the process.:C:\WINDOWS\system\mbacu.exe
Step #3

Now click the Back button and then click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe] C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe
Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

If you had to boot into Safe Mode please boot normally now. Go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file(s) on your hard drive to submit for a scan:C:\WINDOWS\system\mbacu.exe
Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.

Step #7

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file and the information for the scanned file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Well it seems the darn virus is still on the computer. Pop up adds continue to show up out of control. Here is the information you requested. I have also put in for a name change.

Thanks so much for your time.

Hi roofdude (like the name). Let's see if we can't clean this up. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it to your desktop.

Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:
    • C:\WINDOWS\system\mbacu.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe
  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Your system will reboot now. Reboot into Safe Mode by:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.popupsearches.com/sidesearch.html
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe] C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #3

Start ewido and click on the Scanner button. On the Scanner page click on My Computer and then click the Start button to begin the scan. Let it run to completion and fix anything that it finds.

Step #4

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Well oldtimer it appears the malware is still on this computer. How can we get rid of it. The popups are not all the time but when they start it is a barage of popup's 20, 30, 40 at a time. I have adwatch professional and it can not keep up with blocking the pop ups. Well you have tried and I really appreciate it. If you are still game here is the latest hijackthis scan info.

Again I really appreciate you time in this matter.

Kevin

Hello roofdude. Very rarely does this type of infection go away easily. It now appears that all of the original infections that were removed previously are back so let's remove them again.

Plase print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...://my.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.popupsearches.com/sidesearch.html
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bqsqjpyiref] C:\WINDOWS\system32\iyfwwyqi.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RSync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\netsync.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DeskAd Service] C:\Program Files\DeskAd Service\DeskAdServ.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [farmmext] C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
O16 - DPF: {EC51659D-721F-4CBF-9CEA-5E776D89CEA9} - http://www.pacimedia.com/install/pcs_0002.exe
O16 - DPF: {EEF29D20-9A47-4657-ADF7-283EC2504001} - http://download.bigwebportal.com/toolbar2/winenc32.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\system32\iyfwwyqi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netsync.exe
C:\Program Files\DeskAd Service\ <--folder
C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #7

AdAware SE

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘Finish’
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Well Oldtimer it appears that it is hopeless. I am doomed to eternal popup hell. It does appear the popup's have for the most part stopped. But I still see all the same programs in the HijackThis log as we have been trying to remove.

It seems something keeps rewriting them on boot up.

I have noticed also there is a temp folder on my desktop that I did not put there. The folder contains a WINDOWS folder which appears to have most of the same files as the WINDOWS folder C:\WINDOWS Folder. Maybe I should delete this when I am in safe mode. I don't know anymore. But for the hell of it I am posting the hijackthis log for your perusal.

Thanks for all your help

Kevin

hi roofdude. You definitely have something going on here. Let's check for some things that do not show in a HijackThis log.

Download PFind.zip and unzip the contents to its own permanent folder.

Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the pfind.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

After you have rebooted start HijackThis and follow these steps:
  • Click on Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Check the checkbox for List minor sections (full)
  • Check the checkbox for List empty sections (complete)
  • Click on the Generate StartupList Log button
  • Click the Yes button to create the list
Post the contents of C:\pfind.txt and the information from the StartupList back here and I will review it when it comes in.

OT

OK, I started the Pfind as you directed. Partway through an error message came up saying I could not run the program in MS Dos. I clicked ignore and the process quickly ended. So I don't know if the log will give you the information you are looking for. Here are the logs you asked for. I did delete the temp folder that was on my desktop and all the files in it.

Hi roofdude. The pfind showed 1 item so let's fix that and then clean up what the last log showed after that.

Step #1

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as regfix.reg :

REGEDIT4

[-HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run\mbacu.exe]

Locate regfix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DeskAd Service] C:\Program Files\DeskAd Service\DeskAdServ.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bqsqjpyiref] C:\WINDOWS\system32\iyfwwyqi.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RSync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\netsync.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [farmmext] C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\Program Files\DeskAd Service\ <--folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iyfwwyqi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netsync.exe
C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system\mbacu.exe

Step #7

AdAware SE v1.06 (new verison)

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE v1.06:

Hi OT,

I hope you had a good weekend. It looks like we are making progress. It looks like only the popup searches is left. I have not had any pop up problems for quite awhile but I was defenitely experiencing slow machine speed.

Anyway here is the info you requested.

Thanks so much and please let me know what the expected donation should be. I do believe you have helped.

Thanks Again

Kevin

Hey roofdude. Yup. that looks like it. 1 item to go.

We need to disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
  • Open AdAware SE.
  • Go to AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Reboot normally.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
