Hello,

I have a Windows XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 3, Pentium 4, 3.20 GHz, 2 Gig Ram desktop machine. I was browsing several websites and had a popup message to install some program. Without thinking, I accidentally hit yes instead of cancel and now my machine is infected with spyware. When the computer starts, a program called "System Security" pops up that appears to do a system scan and finds 38 trojans and spyware. Since I have never heard of "System Security" before, I am almost positive that I have been infected and that the "System Security" software is in fact part of the malware itself.

I ran HijackThis v2.0.2 after startup and this is the log that resulted. I did not kill any of the processes that I believe to be malware and have not yet run any antispyware software such as Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware. I have physically disconnected my machine from the network.

Please advise on the steps necessary to correct this problem. Thank you and happy new year! Hopefully yours is off to a better start than mine.

And for the GMER Log, I've run into a bit of a problem. I tried to run the program for all my hard drives with one run (checked all the hard drive scan boxes) but the program continued to crash. I then ran the program for each hard drive individually. This resulted in four log files (Hard Drive logs for C, D, E, F) but they were all the same. Therefore, I am sending you one log file. If this is a problem or if I need to run the program for all hard drives with the same run please respond. This is the log file output.

When I open "Hijack this" as you instructed, the following files are not there:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CPMbb91a6ee] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\pemuwiru.dll",a
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: avgrsstx.dll c:\windows\system32\pemuwiru.dll
O21 - SSODL: SSODL - {EC43E3FD-5C60-46a6-97D7-E0B85DBDD6C4} - c:\windows\system32\pemuwiru.dll (file missing)
O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: STS - {EC43E3FD-5C60-46a6-97D7-E0B85DBDD6C4} - c:\windows\system32\pemuwiru.dll (file missing)

I did not go on to the next steps. I don't know what to do, any help would be appreciated.

Please download CleanUp! by stevengould.org and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click CleanUp452.exe and install CleanUp! to your computer
  • Open CleanUp! and click on Options.. button.
  • Under General tab, choose Standard CleanUp! and then click Ok
  • Click on the CleanUp! button. When it asked you to logoff Windows, click on Yes
  • Let your Windows rebooted (or do it manually) and continue with the next step

Then after that, run a full scan with your antivirus and then tell me what it found (with log is better)

I used the Cleanup program and then used Norton Antivirus to perform a full scan. Nothing was identified with the Norton scan. I think my computer is clean. I just want to confirm that there is nothing else I should be doing?

Also is it worth running any of these programs periodically or is that overkill?

Nope.. Your previous log is clean..

Also is it worth running any of these programs periodically or is that overkill?

Just scan your computer with your antivirus/antispyware once in a while.. I suggest every fortnight..

You are good to go.. Lets do some cleanup...

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to Desktop.
  • Make sure you have internet connection..
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
