Hello again,

With this being the second time in a month and a half of being infected with a strain of Vundo, I'm starting to believe it's embedded in a website or something. Ugh. This go around, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware alone did not do the trick as the infection seems to regenerate itself upon every re-boot. (I'm on XP, and had upgraded to Firefox 3.0 since my first infection because I had read somewhere that 3.0, at least at the time, was immune to the malware.)

-EDITED TO INCLUDE THE INFORMATION BELOW (IN DIFFERENT COLOR)-
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan results:

Malware.Trace -- Registry Key -- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS Juan
Trojan.Vundo -- Registry Key -- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS Track System
Trojan.Agent -- File -- C:\WINDOWS\system32\seneka.dat
Trojan.Agent -- File -- C:\WINDOWS\system32\senekadf.dat
Trojan.Agent -- File -- C:\WINDOWS\system32\senekalog.dat

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix.. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.. Please re-enable them back after performing all steps given..

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.

If ComboFix asked you to install Recovery Console, please do so.. It will be your best interest..

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply..

Note: DO NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start, then Run
  • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll::

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\MS Juan]

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Please download GMER and unzip it to your Desktop.
  • Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
  • Click on Scan.
  • When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results into a Notepad >> save it and attach in this thread.

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modfying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.
Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot perform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry
  • Go HERE and download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  • Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  • Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  • Press OK
  • Press YES to create the folder.
For detailed instruction on how to back-up registry via ERUNT, please visit HERE

NEXT

Please download and unzip Icesword to its own folder.

Open the Icesword folder, locate Icesword.exe and double click it to run the program
Posted Image

Click the Registry tab in the bottom right corner of the Icesword window.
Posted Image

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\MS Juan
Posted Image

Right click on MS Juan and choose Delete
Posted Image

Click Yes to confirm the deletion, then close Icesword by clicking the red X

Reboot your computer.. Run ComboFix once again and post the log here

Quick, yet possibly silly question!

In step #2, you had mentioned "Install ERUNT by following the prompts (use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)" -- in my attempt to install ERUNT, I did not encounter an option to say "no" to add the program to the start-up folder portion; only a destination for a shortcut.

"Setup will create the program's shortcuts in the following Start Menu folder"

A few "Next" clicks later, I saw the option to Install, and I was reluctant on proceeding further without any guidance.

Please let me know if your direction meant that I should change the default destination of the ERUNT shortcut from the start-up folder to another location

All right, no wonder why I didn't see the "add ERUNT to the start-up folder" option earlier. I had to click on Install first in order to see the message. Duh, me.

So here is the updated ComboFix log after I have ran ERUNT (hence, backed up my registry), and ran Icesword to delete MS Juan in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\MS Juan:

Awesome...

Please show hidden files and folders
  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan"box on the top of the page:
    • c:\windows\system32\bgl.exe
  • Click on the Upload button
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.
If VirScan.org server is too busy, please submit the file to VirusTotal instead.

NEXT

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Post me VirScan.org report and ESET Online report in your next reply.. How is the computer now?

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

Wow. You certainly are a dedicated member of the HijackThis Team! Your quick assistance is tremendously appreciated thus far

And yes, initially, I was afraid of Googling/Yahooing anything (such as the suspicious files, at least in my eyes, found on HJT) because every time I had done so, there were a million pop-ups... but I noticed a day or two ago, the pop-ups disappeared completely. I'm thinking that's a good thing :)

Step 1: I went to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service and scanned the computer. However, there was a slight problem in the "Copy to Clipboard" step; nothing would copy to the clipboard, so I guess I'll have to do it manually. Result of the c:\windows\system32\bgl.exe upload:

File Information
File Name : msiconf.exe

As I had mentioned in my previous post, I hadn't experienced any pop-ups for a couple of days, but knowing C:\WINDOWS\system32\bgl.exe is totally gone is a great relief! Thank you VERY much for all your assistance!! (After reading the malware-prevention links in other posts, I have come to the conclusion that it's indeed a website that infected my computer and not any downloads. Needless to say, I will not be going to that particular site or anything similar to it again.)

One final question (hopefully) before we can close this thread. The OTCleanIt seems to have cleaned everything except some malware-related files found on C:\SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION \_RESTORE, four of them total (this was found on SUPERAntiSpyware) -- Are these files from the registry back-up process that won't affect me in the future?
