I was advised to post here. I'm pretty sure it was virtumonde.
I am running Windows XP Professional.

Here's what I can and cannot do right now:

1. The Start bar at the bottom is hidden (I can see the top
part of it, but I cannot drag it to expose it -- the double arrow
cursor appears when I pass over it, but it can't "grab" the bar).
2. Cannot (re)install MBAM
3. Cannot run MBAM (something about not being able to find the control
vbalGrid from vbalgrid6.ocx).
4. Cannot install SAS (something about the Windows installer service
could not be accessed)
5. Cannot run Ad-Aware.
6. Cannot run IE (a window appears and immediately disappears)
7. I CAN run Firefox (which I was able to download but not
install SAS).
8. I went to Microsoft's Windows Update site to see if I could
repair Windows, but it said I needed IE version 5 or better
for this to work (I had IE 7 before all this happened). So,
I tried to install IE 8. I was able to download
IE8-windowsXP-x86-ENU.exe to install IE 8, but the installation
died: "Could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make
sure the Cryptographic service is running on the computer."
9. Cannot move icons on the Desktop.
10. I CAN open MyComputer and navigate through my files.
11. The Search functionality in Explorer doesn't work. (I click on
the "Search" button, the subwindow on the side appears, but there
is nothing in it.)
12. I tried to run MRT.exe in Windows/System32 (dated 12/9/08),
but I stopped it after a little while, since it seemed to be scanning
files that don't actually exist (e.g., C:\Config.msi\...).
13. I tried to download MRT from Microsoft, but I could not install
it: "Unable to find a volume for file extraction. Please verify that
you have proper permissions."

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

ok, here's the latest Hijack log. In my next post, I provide additional
information about what happened before things didn't work (that is,
before the first Hijack log above (Jan 1).

Thanks,
Donald

I do have a little bit more information regarding what I did after
I detected that something was wrong. This is from a posting on
another forum that I had posted to.

====
I detected virtumonde on my computer with Ad-Aware. I downloaded
mbam-setup on the Desktop, but the first time I tried to install it,
there were errors regarding not being able to modify the registry.
After unsuccessful attempts to manually fix the registry and
delete the recently created dll's in Windows/System32 (dated Dec 28
and later), virtumonde was still there.

However, I tried to install MBAM again, and it worked. I followed
the instructions on the bleepingcomputer web site (but I did NOT
rename mbam.exe (or whatever the executable is called); also,
I cut off the update after installation but then ran it -- there
was no update then).

When it ran, it identified the various dll's and registry entries
(something like 35 or so items). I clicked on Remove, and it worked
as expected: it reported the list of items removed and said that it
needed to reboot to delete the other items.

Now, here's the problem: on the login screen, it has my user name
but it asks for a password. However, before running MBAM, I did
not have a password for my account, so I now can't log in! Is this
a known side effect of the removal process?

I am running a (very old, 8 years!) Sony VIAO with XP
Professional (service pack 3, I believe).

Any ideas for how to fix this would be appreciated. (I searched
for this password problem in this forum, but I could not find
anything.) [I would be a little embarassed if the solution is as
simple as logging in as Administrator and changing the password to
my account, especially since I am not sure what my Administrator
password is. However, I don't want to proceed with this if there is
a chance that virtumonde is still there or if there is a simpler
way to deal with this.]

====

Note: I did eventually find my admin password and was able to
log in and run HijackThis, resulting in the log I posted on
bleepingcomputer (Jan 1).

Thanks,
Donald

Hi

Do you have log of mbam results?

Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {57673E3C-99FC-4326-A71F-21DBB2B19642} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxywxwU.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6D794CB4-C7CD-4c6f-BFDC-9B77AFBDC02C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkKCRhff.dll (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.0_01) -
O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkKCRhff - jkKCRhff.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Please post Rsit results and Mbam results(if you have)

I don't have the MBAM log.

I did followed your Hijack instructions. (I confirmed that
it "fixed" them by doing the scan again, and those entries
were missing.)

Then, I ran RSIT from the desktop:
1. A window popped up that said "Writing header information".
No progress on the progress bar was made.
2. A dialog appeared, entitled "AutoIt Error":
Line -1:
Error: Incorrect number of parameters in function call.

The other window was still on the screen when the error appeared.

I noticed that there is a new folder in my C: drive called "rsit"
and it has a log.txt file in it, but the file is empty.

Hi

Okay, let's run Combofix:

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

ok, combofix ran. Here is the log, along with the new hijack log.

I didn't check everything I listed in my original post, but the Start bar
is back and I can move icons around. I didn't want to fool around too
much until you had had a chance to look at the logs.

Looks good.
Do you have firewall in Symantec Norton?

No Symantec firewall. Just the XP firewall (I've got XP Professional).
Do you recommend that I get such software?

One more thing. Over the next few days, I will be checking whether
I have all the functionality I had before. Is it possible that there are
things that don't work (because of the malware) that would not have
shown up in the log reports? Just curious.

In any case, thank you SO much for your help (and sorry about all
the false starts and misunderstandings) !!

Thanks,
Donald

Hi :)

Yes I sugges that you download one third party firewall. Windows XP firewall isn't enough to protect. (Windows Vista has better firewall and UAC, so there it would be enough)

Here is good firewalls, please download one of them and install :)

1) ZoneAlarm
(At installing Zonealarm, please uncheck this option "include a ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker...". The Toolbar is not recommended... You can read more about it here.)
2) Agnitum
3) Sunbelt/Kerio
4) Comodo
(at installing Comodo, please uncheck these options: "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", "Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage". If you use another antivirus, please uncheck "Install Comodo Antivirus".)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

I think everything will work fine, like before starting removing malwares. (I'm sorry, if I didn't get the idea :) )

Please post a fresh HijackThis log back here so I see that firewall is installed :)
