I have been battling this infection for the past 4 or 5 days. It began with fake pop ups warning of possible infections and go here download this or that software, having seen them before I knew they were bogus. It also blocked me from running the auto updater on internet explorer. I ran AVG and Malwarebytes in regular and safe modes. They both found infections and seemingly got rid of them. After Malwarebytes ran in safemode I was able to restart the autoupdater and I updated IE and I also updated Java (although I may not have got rid of all the old versions)

Ran Malwarebytes again and it said all was clean but very quickly the pops ups were back. My only advantage is I use Firefox but the infection thinks I use IE so the pop ups all come in IE so I can just deny them when my Zonealarm gives me an alert that it is trying to access. But it is still a big pain and I am worried about what other vulnerabilities this is causing.

After some reading on here I downloaded vundofix and virtumundobegone. neither of them found or did anything. Which I don't understand because right after using them I ran malwarebytes again which again found more infected registry files (and removed them, again)

I have also ran cleanup, and ATF-cleaner and I am pretty much out of ideas. I am not getting any pop ups right this minute but they seem to come at random when i go to open a new webpage so I am sure there is still something lurking in here. I have run two scans with malwarebytes just tonight and both found more infected files.

I haven't run hijackthis yet but below is the DDS scan result. any help you can throw my way would be great.

Thanks

Stephen

Hi, duffmid

Welcome.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Install the Recovery Console upon request.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

No request for help throughout private messaging will be attended.

If I have helped you, consider making a donation to help me continue the fight against Malware!

Ran Combofix (log below) then manually rebooted to get AVG and Zonealarm fully up again and then ran Hijackthis (log after Combofix)

I haven't seen any pop ups happening yet tonight. Let me know what you think I need to do next if anything.

Thanks

Stephen

VideoCacheView is a free program. Usually these programs come packed with adware. Kaspersky findings should be removed but, by doing so, the application will be affected. I leave it up to you.

How is the computer doing?

The computer seems to be running okay now. No pop ups in the last day or so. Do you see anything in those logs that needs action or does it look clear?

If it is clear is there anything special to do to get rid of the items I installed through this process or is it just a matter of control panel - add/remove programs?

Hi, duffmid

Download the enclosed file. Save and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a batch file. Once extracted doubleclick on the Fix.bat file.

The rest looks clear.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

Since the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, as well as the folders created by these tools.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.

    Posted Image
Create a Restore point (If the above process fails to do so):
  • Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  • In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • ZonedOut + IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
  • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein and this one by Miekiemoes.

Click Here for some advise from our security Experts.

Please use the thread's Tools and mark this thread as "Solved".

I spoke to soon. Or I got myself infected again. Either way I went to a site www.pspiso.com (a forum) and the page seemed to hang when i was doing a search for topics then i got a whole bunch of pop ups trying to access being caught by my zonealarm and it also loaded too porn type shortcuts on my desk top. Obviously i will not be going back to that website.

I reset the computer before it could do any more damage, went into safe mode, deleted the shortcuts and ran Malwarebytes again and removed what it found. Then i restarted and started to follow the instructions you had given over again. Ran combofix, ran hijack this, and i'm now running Kaspersky again. the scan is almost complete and so far it has found 6 infected objects. When it is complete I will post the results.

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop. Once downloaded, RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf and select: Install (no need to restart)

Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

Post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Should I do the fix.bat you posted earlier first because I have not done that yet or do the .inf from your last post first? And do I need to do combofix again or not?

Since the system was re-infected, you should run the .inf file and Combofix. Once I see the Combofix report and a fresh Hijackthis log, we will take it from there.
No need to run the Fix.bat at this point.
