Hello hkbiu and welcome to the BC forums. I don't see smitfraud in this log but I do see some other fun things that we should probably remove. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document:

REGEDIT4

[-HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\SMSSU]
[-HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Tmntsrv32]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B}]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\XMLLIB.XMLDP]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\XMLLIB.XMLDP.1]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\ATLASSstp]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\BHOASSstp]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\HTASSstp]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\MSMsgSvc]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\SEHLPstp]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\WTLBAstp]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B}]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe]
[-HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.exe]

Save the document to your desktop as regfix.reg and then close Notepad.

Step #3

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #4

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: XMLDP Class - {60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B} - C:\WINDOWS\xmllib.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tmntsrv32] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SMSSU] C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #5

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\xmllib.dll
C:\WINDOWS\explorer32dbg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\iexplore_dbg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE

Step #6

Locate regfix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

Step #7

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #8

Please run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #9

AdAware SE

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘Finish’
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
Step #10

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

@OT--this log was posted in this thread and I've split it off and megred it here. Don't know if all your instructions have been carried out.

@ hkbiu--please only post HJT logs in this thread til your problem is resolved. You are in good hands with OT and he will be with you shortly.

Hi hkbiu. You do not have a smitfraud infection and by trying to do a fix for an infection you do not have can seriously harm your computer.

Follow the directions in my first post and post back a new log as outlined there.

Hi hkbiu. Your log is now clean. Good job! How are things running? What about your taskbar and desktop? Are they back or do we have to fix those yet?

Depending on the configuration of your machine, you can have a desktop.ini file in every folder on the drive. It holds any custom settings or views for that particular folder.

I would recommend removing either Norton or AVG. When running 2 anti-virus applications at the same time, the 2 programs will conflict with each other and can cause file conflicts. Both are good products so pick the one you like best and remove the other one.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

OT

Hi hkbiu. Ok, let's do this.

To fix the taskbar do this:

Download TaskbarRepairToolPlus!.zip and unzip it to your desktop. Run the tool and fix the items that you are having problems with.

To fix the desktop do this:

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as regfix.reg :

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=hex:00,00,00,00
"NoActiveDesktop"=dword:00000000
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

  00,00,00

Locate regfix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

Restart your computer and set up your desktop as you want it.

Cheers.

Hi hkbiu. Do this for me.

Navigate to c:\documents and settings\<your user name>\desktop. If the folder is empty then the infection removed the items on your desktop and you will have to replace them manually what you whant on your desktop.

For your taskbar issue see this MS article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;318027

Follow the steps in the article to repair the taskbar.

Cheers.
