Hi! Recently, I tried to do something the "easy" (read: stupid) way, and am now paying the price for it. Currently, Virtumonde (Virtumonde, Virtumonde.generic and Virtumonde.sci) is reliably being detected, supposedly removed (using Spybot Search & Destroy), and reappearing on the next scan; SmitFraud-C is *sometimes* being removed, but later reappearing, and SpywareGuard 2008 (the newest member of the scurvy crew) has been so busy reinstalling itself that I've had to tell AVG to ignore it and stop removing it. (System has been disconnected from the network since the latest infection became known - I'm flash-driving programs and log/text-files via a non-infected system.)

As well, somewhere in the process of repeated removal attempts, my boot-process seems to have become somewhat mangled - upon booting, the process appears to hang without finishing loading all the crap I usually have running in the system tray, without a functioning Explorer. (No taskbar, desktop, et cetera. Wallpapers and dual monitors are up, and screensaver runs; SSD & AVG are apparently running as well.) Killing the single "explorer.exe" task and running a new one (from Task Manager) will remedy, but the system tray only displays my network connection icons (wired and separate/disabled wireless) and the "remove hardware" icon for USB junk. And the clock, of course.

Note: OS is XP Pro SP 2, not SP3; SP3 is a single hand-edited registry entry for GTA IV compatibility. I can edit it back to the correct (SP 2) setting, as need be, since I'm not seeing stability improvements during play from trojan/viral infections.

Note 2: AVG is currently slightly outdated; I don't reboot often, and thus the last "update manager" update wasn't applied before infection. At this time, update-reboots fail to properly update - I suspect malware interference. (I've noticed recently-created randomly-named .DLLs in system32 that are linked to AVG for no known reason; Google fails to return results for said random names. Can be manually renamed (command-line/DOS), but no change in AVG observed. Possibly a fresh random-name .DLL has been created.)

Thank you for any/all assistance!

I'm sorry, I got tired of waiting. Can ComboFix and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. it appears to have worked at this time.

Needless to say, this thread can be closed. Thanks for the time! (And, since I read about the fix in other threads here, for the info and link s to the software in question.)
