What do I have to do to get rid of this?

Hi. I've been having trouble with my computer recently. Every time I log-on, a virus pops up (via AVG's warning). Also, occasionally during my time on the computer, similar viruses pop-up.

In addition, I have the feeling that the information I submit online (via google, ebay, etc.) is being tracked, because occasionally various "related items" pop-ups occur, including search 42, various 401 and 403 errors, among others.

Also, some ads on regular pages (hotmail, for example) appear as "page cannot be displayed" or "action cancelled" type pages.

I have used Ad-Aware, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta, AVG, and Hijackthis, with seemingly no results.

There are 2 infections that have occured according to AVG on my computer: "Trojan Horse Agent.U" and "Trojan Horse Dropper Agent.5.AV"

The two Trojan Horse Agent.U's appeared in as:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{7DCA1BE4-D752-48D6-A25E-C722C8FD1BC4}\RP320\A0006656.dll

and

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{7DCA1BE4-D752-48D6-A25E-C722C8FD1BC4}\RP320\A0006658.dll

Both of the above were 409.5 KB

The numerous Trojan Horse Dropper Agent.5.AV's appeared as

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\xxxxxxxx.exe

where the 8 x's are random letters (it is always 8 letters, and seemingly random)

All of the above droppers are always 468 KB

I had turned off my system restore feature, rebooted my computer, and ran Microsoft Anti-Spyware, which did pick up one infection. I removed it, and turned system restore back on, and the problem persists. I tried again to turn off my system restore and run Microsoft Anti-Spyware, but it did not catch anything.

All recent updates for my computer and the aforementioned spyware/adware/virus programs have been installed.


Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially what measures I can take to prevent another infection.

Hello puyo53 and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download Process Explorer by Sysinternals and unzip it to your desktop. Do not run it yet.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it to your desktop. Do not run it yet.

Step #2

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document:

Save the document to your desktop as fixvundo.reg and close Notepad.

Step #3

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #4

Locate procexp.exe on your desktop and double-click on it to start the program.
  • In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on WinLogon.exe to bring up the WinLogon.exe Properties Dialog.
    • Click on the Threads tab at the top.
    • Locate each instance of msvcms.dll, click once on the instance and then click the Kill button.
    • If you see any .ini or .bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well.
    • After you have killed all of the files shown above under WinLogon click Ok.
  • Next, double-click on Explorer.exe.
    • Click on the Threads tab at the top.
    • Locate each instance of msvcms.dll, click once on the instance and then click the Kill button.
    • If you see any .ini or .bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well.
    • After you have killed all of the files shown above under Explorer click Ok.
Step #5

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {581F22DA-7202-4F21-AEF3-114787156016} - C:\WINNT\system\msvcms.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: msvcms - C:\WINNT\system\msvcms.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: playodbc - C:\WINNT\REGIST~1\playodbc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: regfont - C:\WINNT\security\Database\regfont.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: xmlvga - C:\WINNT\Web\xmlvga.dll (file missing)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #6

Locate the fixvundo.reg on your desktop and right-click on it. Choose Merge from the popup menu and answer Yes or Ok to any further prompts.

Step #7

Locate KillBox.exe on your desktop and double-click on it to start the program.
  • Click Delete on Reboot.
  • Paste the line below into the top Full Path of File to Delete box.
    • C:\WINNT\system\msvcms.dll
      C:\WINNT\REGIST~1\playodbc.dll (look for a folder whose name begins with REGIST)
      C:\WINNT\security\Database\regfont.dll
      C:\WINNT\Web\xmlvga.dll
  • Click the Delete File button which looks like a stop sign.
  • Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
  • Click Yes at the Delete next Reboot prompt.
  • If you get a PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process! message then just restart manually.
Step #8

OK. After your computer has rebooted normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

I followed all steps and it seems like everything worked.

One minor issue--when I ran KillBox.exe, there was no C:\WINNT\Web\xmlvga.dll file. There was a C:\WINNT\Web\xmlmain file, and there was a C:WINNT\Web\rasun.dll file. I removed xmlmain, but not rasun.dll. Everything else was as you said.

Thanks so much for your help. Do you know what else I could do in the future to prevent another infection? I'm actually quite careful about what sites I visit and what content I download, but still got this infection. Do you know if there is any additional information on this virus, and why programs such as AVG and Microsoft Anti-Spyware don't pick them up?

Hi puyo53. Can you post a current hijackThis log so I can check and make sure that everything was removed and no new infections have snuck in under the wire? When we get to a clean log I have a number of suggestions I'll give you for protecting your computer and resetting the system settings that we have changed while dealing with this issues.

Hi puyo53. Your log looks clean. Good job! How are things running? Any problems?

The only other thing I see is that there appears to be 2 anti-virus applications running, AVG and Norton. It is not recommended to run 2 anti-virus applications simultaneously because it can cause file access issues and if a virus is detected both programs will try to remove it and neither one will be able to. Both applications are good programs so I recommend choosing the one you like best and removing the other one.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

Well, the Norton was a free 90-trial that came with my computer when I bought it...it has since expired and isn't being used. I should probably uninstall all of its parts then?

The AVG is the active anti-virus product I use.

I'll do the rest of the steps today.

Hi puyo53. Yes, if Norton has expired then it is basically a boat anchor on your system resources. Go ahead and uninstall it.
