This is an unusual problem and you've done most of the usual troubleshooting tests.
The most significant thing is that your system worked fine as soon as you restored it - but after updating it started to act up.
Check in your Event Viewer for errors. Go to Start...Run...and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Click on the System log in the left hand pane and check the right hand pane for errors.
Do the same thing with the Application log.
Also, check your Device Manager to see if your devices are present and operating properly. Look for any red x's or yellow !'s. To do this, go to Start...Run...and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
If none of this reveals an issue, then I'd suggest:
Restoring again, then updating all of the HP stuff first.
Then test your system to see if it works properly.
If so, then update to Service Pack 2 (not Service Pack 3) and test again.
Then update all your HP stuff again and test again
Then update to SP3 and test again
Then update the HP stuff again (and test again)
Finally get the remaining Windows Updates one by one - and test after each one.
This should allow you to isolate where the problem is coming from - and with that info we can proceed with other suggestions.
