Just thought I would add the following description of what is happening STILL...

The computer was obviously infected. It had redirects for all virus protection programs, redirects for microsoft to their own site spoofing microsoft and a whole bunch of other stuff. Because he didn't need any of the data files, I just wiped the machine clean (or so I thought.) I did a full reinstall of XP choosing to do a full drive format (rather than the quick format) which I thought did some bit flipping to cleanse the drive.

I now have XP installed, but cannot "Activate Windows" nor can I do a windows update. In fact, I cannot go to any *.microsoft.com sites. I can now browse to other sites with no problem, but the microsoft issue is still there.

Is there a chance that one of the many programs (many of which were labeled as fixes for the existing problems) flashed a piece of hardware with new software? I have already flashed the BIOS which would seem to be the easiest thing for the bad guys to get at, but could there be something else.

If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE

This may seem repetitive, but we need to see the current status of your system.
Please Hold on it may take us a day or so to get back with you.
