Posted 26 December 2008 - 03:39 PM

Due to the Holiday hustle I have had to put this post off till now, but I have been infected with Virtumonde for over a week and have tried ALL the steps I went through the last time to no avail. I have been blocked from many sites including BleepingComputer.com so I have to copy and paste to a laptop to post. Most of the Anti Virus/Spyware/Malware programs that I have wont even respond and Ad-Aware keeps finding it over and over despite acting like it removes it. Spybot S&D won’t start even after reinstalling it in Safe Mode. Norton is useless in safe mode and says all is fine. Malwarebytes won’t open or run, along with Combo Fix.
All of my Restore points were deleted except for 1 at the moment of infection.
I installed Super Anti Spyware and ran it several times from Safe mode and got rid of a lot of “infected” files and moved a lot of other stuff. Internet Explorer wouldn’t open either so I disabled most of the add-ons and plug-ins. It works now but still blocks access to BC.com.
A program called Spyware Guard keeps popping up telling me that a BHO has been added. {2CE66399-10BC-48F8-BE9B-22C467EC9098} I click Remove the BHO and it says it was removed but immediately pops up again. I may have installed this program months ago but I actually don’t remember.
I finally got HijackThis to run in regular mode and saved the log which I am posting now.
At this point I think I have exhausted everything that I am capable of doing.

Please help me, Rocco

Hello, roc54
 to BleepingComputer.com

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:
  • In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
  • Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Finally, please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
We Need to Run ComboFix

Note to readers of this post other than the starter of this thread:
ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool which should NOT BE USED without guidance of an expert.

If this tool helped you, please consider a donation to it's author: Posted Image

How to run ComboFix:
  • Please download ComboFix from one of the following mirrors, and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any running Anti-Virus or Anti-Malware programs. This includes Firewalls, Anti-Virus, Spyware Scanners, etc. Any or all of them may interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Double click Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Read and accept (Press Yes) to the disclaimer.
  • For Windows XP Systems: Install the Recovery Console:
    • If you are using Windows XP and do not already have the Recovery Console installed, please ensure your internet connection is active (if possible), and press Yes. If for some reason your internet is not working, please press No. If you are not using Windows XP, you will not be prompted.
    • When prompted to accept the EULA, press OK.
    • Accept Microsoft's EULA (Press Yes).
    • When you are told that the RC is installed correctly, please press YES to continue scanning for malware.
  • ComboFix will run. Simply wait for it to finish.
  • When it finishes, ComboFix will produce a log. Please post that log in your next reply here :)
NOTE: If ComboFix will not run, please rename it to GlobRemover.exe and try again!

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ComboFix.txt

Billy, thanks. I was about to give up hope. I will try ComboFix after Church today and post about 1:00.

Thanks, Rocco

Billy III, I followed your directions and will post log, BUT....

there was no option to install recovery console. I also had to rename it, that worked but it had to reboot my comp twice.

NOTE: If ComboFix will not run, please rename it to GlobRemover.exe and try again!

Hello, roc54
Your system appears to have the Recovery Console already

Your System is Infected with a Backdoor!!
Backdoors cause severe damage to windows' internals, and allow an attacker complete control over the infected system. Because this state allows the attacker to download new malware on demand, log keystrokes, execute programs, and/or view the system's screen, it is recommended to reformat and reinstall the operating system on this machine. Several experts in the security community believe that once a system is infected with one of these types of backdoors, the system itself can never be trusted again.

I ask that you disconnect this system from the internet NOW!. While it is attached to the internet, the attacker can modify the system, and prevent fixes from working as intended.

Another danger of this type of infection is that of Identity Theft. Because such malware can read all of your passwords, bank account numbers, etc. from your keystrokes, I would recomend contacting banking institutions accessed from this machine to ensure your accounts are secure. Most banks will not charge to send you new credit/debit cards, and getting these numbers replaced would be a good idea. It would also be a good idea to change passwords for anything you commonly use online. Online stores, Facebook/Myspace, Email, etc. If it has been on that machine it may have been read by someone else. Don't do it from this machine, as it is now compromised. Do it from another known clean machine. A good place to do this is at your local public library.

I would strongly recomend format and reinstallation of this machine. For more information, you may wish to read one of these excellent articles:Please let me know if you wish to continue to clean this machine or if you wish to format.

We need to re-run ComboFix with some additonal directives.
  • Please disable any running anti-virus programs.

If you are unsure how to do this, see this topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/114351/how-to-temporarily-disable-your-anti-virus-firewall-and-anti-malware-programs/

  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
    file::
    c:\windows\System47.exe
    c:\windows\System47.scr
  • Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
  • Posted Image
Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt". Please copy and paste that report here.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ComboFix.txt

Bill III, AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

I understand the recommendation to format and reinstall but I have a few ???? first.

1.) Can this Backdoor be on the second drive also? I use it mostly for storage, but have lots of junk on it also.
2.) Can my pictures, music, movies, games and documents be infected?
3.) What shouldn't I save from this hard drive before I reinstall?
4.) This system was purchased from eBay and didn't come with a reinstall cd. I have several Dell XP sp2 cds from work. Will they work?
5.) When I first got this trojan/virus I unplugged the ethernet cable and deleted all browser info. I was disconnected from the internet for a week until today. I connected to send the log file and logged into Yahoo and Hotmail. How can I know if my files have been sent to somewhere in cyberspace? Is there a way to check an outgoing logfile or something.

I'm a bit discouraged right now but I do appreciate your help.

Hello, roc54

1.) Can this Backdoor be on the second drive also? I use it mostly for storage, but have lots of junk on it also.

I don't think so. That drive should be fine.

2.) Can my pictures, music, movies, games and documents be infected?

No. This is not a "Classical" virus in that it doesn't overwrite or modifiy existing files.

3.) What shouldn't I save from this hard drive before I reinstall?

I would toss out as much as possible. Best would be to backup your stuff, unplug the backup medium, format/reinstall, install an anti-virus program (Such as the free and excellent Avira http://free-av.com ), and then copy your data back over.

4.) This system was purchased from eBay and didn't come with a reinstall cd. I have several Dell XP sp2 cds from work. Will they work?

Not likely. Those disks are keyed to the specific hardware configuration for the machine they came with.

Not that I know of

6.) Do you still want me to run ComboFix again?

If you want to clean the machine. There's no point in it if you decide to format.

I'm gonna try to clean this machine for now and save all my important stuff on a removable drive. If I can get a Windows XP pro cd from a friend, I'll reinstall then. meanwhile I'll not do any buying or banking from that machine till further notice. We didn't do any transactions from it since before the virus so I should be safe for now, but I'll start changing all my passwords.

7.) Can this malicious person/site read my docs and files from my comp or does he have to download them first? I have an Excel spreadsheet with some usernames & passwords on it. Gulp.

I will post new Combo log in a bit from this laptop, Wifey wants to use it now.

Thanks, Rocco

Hello, roc54

7.) Can this malicious person/site read my docs and files from my comp or does he have to download them first? I have an Excel spreadsheet with some usernames & passwords on it. Gulp.

It is possible, however unlikely, that the attacker has gained a copy of that file. Replacing those codes as soon as possible would be a good idea.

Viewpoint is considered foistware instead of malware because it is installed without users approval, but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". You may like to read this article about the potential of this Viewpoint software here:
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on Start > Run... > and then paste the following into the "Open" field: "appwiz.cpl" and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, and/or Viewpoint Media Player.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 11...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows" (OR if you are on a x64 system, "Windows x64")
  • Select your Language: "Multi-Language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs (Or "Uninstall a Program" on Vista) and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe (Or jre-6u10-windows-x64.exe for x64 systems)
  • Follow the on screen instructions to install the latest Java version.
I would like us to use ESET (NOD32)'s Online Scanner
  • Please go to ESET OnlineScan (NOD32)
  • You will then see the Terms of Use, tick the check-box infront of YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Now click Start
  • Should you face a Security Warning that asks if you want to install and run a file called "OnlineScanner.cab", click Yes
  • Click Start
    • Note: (the Onlinescanner will now prepare itself for running on your pc)
  • To do a full-scan, tick: "Remove found threats" and "Scan potentially unwanted applications"
  • Press Scan
  • The Onlinescan will now start and scan your pc (this could take a while)
  • When the scan has finished, it will show a screen with two tabs "overview" and "details" and the option to get information or buy software, just close the window
  • Click Start >> Run... >> type: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • The Scanresults will now open in Notepad
  • Click into the text area, right-click and chose "select all" (or use +A)
  • Right-click again and chose "Copy" (or +C)
  • Close/Exit Notepad
  • Navigate to this thread and post your log along with anything else requested from us, by right-clicking and "paste" (or ctrl+v) in the text area of the reply post you just created.
Note: For Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ESET OnlineScan's Log

Hello, roc54
Yeah.. the onlinescans can take a while. But they are essential in that they occasionally find things our tools cant that lie latent ;)

Congratulations! You now appear clean!

Are things running okay? Do you have any more questions?

System Still Slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware
We Need to Remove ComboFix
  • Please go to Start -> Run
  • Enter "ComboFix /u" (without quotes). Note the space betwen "ComboFix" and "/u", it needs to be there.
    Posted Image
  • Press OK (Or hit enter).
  • Allow ComboFix to remove itself.
We Need to Clean Up Our Mess
  • Please download OTCleanIt from one of the following mirrors and save it to your desktop:
  • Double click the Posted Image icon.
  • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
  • Allow your system to reboot.
Recommendations
Below are some recommendations to lower your chances of (re)infection.
  • Install Spyware Blaster and update it regularly
If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
  • Install the MVPs hosts file, and update it regularly
You can use the HostMan host file manager to do this automaticly if you wish.
For more information on the hosts file, and what it can do for you, you can view the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  • Install an Anti-Spyware program, and update it regularly
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

If you are using Windows XP or earlier
Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!

If you are using Windows Vista
    • Click the "Start Menu" (or Windows Orb)
    • Click "All Programs"
    • Click "Windows Update"
    • On the left, choose "Change Settings"
    • Ensure that the checkbox "Use Microsoft Update" at the bottom of the window is checked.
    • Press OK and accept the UAC prompt.
Note: You shouldn't need to check this checkbox every single time you update, only the first time.
    • Click "Check for Updates" in the upper left corner.
    • Follow the instructions to install the latest updates.
    • Reboot and repeat the "Check for Updates" until there are no more critical updates to install
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on your machine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :).

Bill, this is great news.
I'll do all the cleanup tomorrow after work since it's after midnite now.

A few more questions please.

1.) How did you know I had a Backdoor? What in the scan log tipped you off?

2.) Won't the Sygate firewall prevent someone from accessing my machine?

3.) Is there a program that will alert you to a backdoor intrusion?
(I'm sure the CIA or FBI have 'em.)

4.) Do you still recommend Format and Reinstall?

Thanks so much and I'll post tomorrow when I'm done, Rocco

Hello :)

1.

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Drivers/Services )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
.

-------\Service_TDSSserv.sys
-------\Legacy_TDSSserv.sys

More here:
http://www.symantec.com/en/id/enterprise/s...-99&tabid=1

Don't listen to Symantec's "Risk Level 1" thingy.. they give everything 1s.

2. Not against TDSS. And in this case, the program is running on your computer attempting to get out. Unless you specifically set a deny rule for it it won't be stopped.

3. Not like this. Anti-Virus programs are supposed to detect and remove this but TDSSserv is a nasty load of bleep ;)

4. Yes

Hope that helps :)

Bill, I just finished the cleanup and had to reinstall Spybot S&D, running it now and BAM!!! It says I have Smitfraud-C.

Also, it always finds "Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_Disabled" and has it checked for removal... should I?

I'll run S&D again after it stops and see if it still detects Mr. Smitfraud. If it does, should I run HJThis again and post it?

Or maybe Malwarbytes?

Roc
