I offered to help a friend set up a wireless router, and discovered the computer was full of all kinds of suspicious programs, along with a really bizarre set of resolution and font-size preferences that I couldn't sort out. Since there was nothing important saved on the computer, I reformatted and installed a new copy of Windows XP Home from the old Dell disc, but it turned out to be SP1 and I've spent a looong while trying to install updates. Between SP2 and SP3 I noticed I wasn't able to open the Task Manager or regedit because they have been "disabled by your administrator", and (though I have SP3 installed now) I noticed while reading the preparation guide for posting here that I can't activate the Windows firewall due to nonexistent group preferences. Running Norton AntiVirus (from the old Dell discs as well, but updated to current definitions) showed me W32.SillyDC associated with the SYSTMON.EXE file in my system32\drivers folder. It wasn't able to access or clean the file, and I just got an endless series of little alert boxes with only an "OK" button to click.

I see from the preparation guide that I ought to include an attach.txt file. I don't have one right this moment, since I downloaded Trend Micro HijackThis (recommended by some other message board I found a couple hours ago). I'm including the text from the logfile, since that looks like the DDS.txt file there. I'll get DDS now, but I figured I'd post in the hopes that someone is able to help in the meantime -- or at least that someone is able to start reading/pondering while I get these other text files.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE

This may seem repetitive, but we need to see the current status of your system, please.
Please Hold on it may take us a day or so to get back with you.

R,
K
