family hp pc w/ winxp home edition.

can boot into welcome screen, keyboard not functional.

can reach windows explorer as Guest, but restricted ability.
but can open programs. cannot remove anything because logged on as guest.
cannot boot safe mode because of no keyboard function.

mouse operational but cannot access administrator privileges since i cannot
type in any password.

cd drawer not operational, don't know if this is related issue or due to grandaughter's button-pushing technique.

pc has 3.5 drive and usb port.

can reach windows explorer as Guest, but restricted ability.

have replaced with a working keyboard, did not solve the issue.

does removing cmos battery correct any corrupted configurations.

all suggestions appreciated...

When the HP screen first comes up, can you access the BIOS (by pressing F10) or the boot menu (by pressing Esc)?
If so, then your keyboard is working.
If not, try another keyboard.
Try a different kind of keyboard (if you've got a USB keyboard, then try a PS2 keyboard).

Well...I'd just do a clean install, not throw it away .

It may be needed in the future.
