Alright...a couple days ago I got hit with lots of pop-ups, and AVG said something about a Trojan.Vundo. So I looked it up, and a site recommended that I use Spyware Doctor. Ok, so I downloaded it, it found a bunch, cleaned it up. Did a couple scans, and finally everything came up clean. Was fine. Then the day before yesterday I got hit with the pop-ups again. So, I fired it up again, but this time, one registry value would persist no matter how many times I wiped it off. I went into safe mode, deleted it, fired back up normal, it was still there! So I did a full scan, found a bunch more Trojan.Vundo files, cleaned em out. Then, yesterday, my XP began to glitch really badly. It would sometimes hang at login, but it was rare. Today, my XP appears to be done for. I have a XP/Vista dual boot, and I'm on Vista right now. Whenever I try and go on XP, one of the following happens:

1. Shows XP logo, loads, goes black but instead of going to Welcome screen, reboots. (Only happened once)

2. BSOD. (Happened Once)

3. ACTUALLY loads (Hasn't happened since yesterday)

3. Log in, wallpaper appears...but the taskbar and icons are missing. Computer sits at wallpaper forever, I can use task manager and see the standard lot of proccesses, but Explorer.exe is missing. (1/3 times I boot up) Can use task manager to log/reboot.

4. Log in, wallpaper appears, icons appear, taskbar slowly fills up with icons, loads normally, etc. etc. etc., but then in the middle of loading it hangs. If I click on something, it will respond (like an icon will highlight) but past that the computer is unresponsive. I have to do a force reboot. (Every other time)

Safe mode appears to work, though it could die at any time I guess. :/ I read this article from Bleeping Computer, but I cant use the first two options because I cant log in. I was wondering if there is anything else I can do/I should use option 3.

Anyone got an answer for this? I'm not gonna kill my XP until I'm sure there is nothing I can do.

Can you run an MBAM scan?

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

If you listened, you would have read that I cannot log in to XP without lockup/bsod/crash/etc. How can I run a scan without being logged in? Should I run it in safe mode? Something other than the usual copy/paste would be helpful.

Yes, try safe mode ,we got to try to get some kind of log.

Safe mode appears to work

I post the full instructions in case it worked. You can also ttry copying the file from another PC and transferring via CD,Usb,Flash drive etc...

This app is actually sronger in safe mode.
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

How can I install the program if I cant log in? I tried it in safe mode (in safe mode right now) and it says that the Administrator has blocked that action. Doesn't surprise me though. :/ I also got an update on the infection, it seems that even "Safe" Mode isn't safe anymore. I fired up IE to try and download the software, BANG! Popups galore.

EDIT: Going to try installing from Vista, then rebooting into XP Safe Mode and running it....

If you can get anything to run then run the HiJack This preparation and post that while you can. As once you can no longer access anything ,your only step will be a wipe of the hard drive and full reinstall of the Operating System.

EDIT: Thought I should ask, should I still do the HijackThis log, and do you think it would be safe to try booting normally.

Alright...I'm on XP without Safe Mode. Everything "seems" right. But I ran a SAS scan, came up with a boatload of Vundo detections, though much less than before the safemode scan (Although this scan was only a quick one.) Registry definately seems to be the biggest problem with infections right now. I'm going to go ahead and do a HJT log and post it in the HJT forum...wish me luck mate.

EDIT: This is my HJT thread.

EDIT 2: Bucketload of Vundo detections that had dissapeared in the 1st scan are back...MS Juan FTL. I also saw something in here about Windows\System32\YEGUSASO.dll, which is odd because when I log in I get an error message saying something like "Cannot find yegusaso.dll" and I think (Tired, brain is being fuzzy) something about "cannot run".

EDIT 3: I was just curious, the article I highlighted in my 1st post talked about VirtumondeBeGone, to be used in Safe Mode if the other solutions did not work. Would it be worth it to try it? Can it have any negative side effects? Should I wait and see what the HJT log brings up with the techies?

EDIT 4: XP main is down again, I have a feeling I'll have to use SAS in Safe Mode if I want to run XP normal from now on.

Hey great work. You will get excellent help from the HJT group.
Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the thread titled "Post in this thread when you haven't received an answer in five days.".

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.
