Loaded up the wagon yesterday with all my camping gear for the usual trip to Sunny Central Otago export fruit growing area for the Summer.

Leaving very shortly so would like to wish everyone here at Bleeping Computer the happiest of festive seasons and a most prosperous New Year.

Cheers, Rob

Thank you all Folks.

Almost finished setting up but had to try a laptop and bounced straight on. Found I still had 6 hours credit from last time which is great as at 6c/min on this hotspot, it takes very little time to run through $100.

The plant is firing up on Saturday so not long for my R n R, LOL.

Plenty of plums coming up OB, and nectarines, peaches and lots of apricots. Boss' wife just gave me a big handful of cherries - delicious.

Cheers

Hi OB.

What do I do here in Alexandra? Well I don't get much spare time, LOL.

It is a family business that has been around for quite a while. The packing sheds are located in part of the old railway buildings and is therefore on the Central Otago Rail Trail.which makes it very interesting. A number of years ago, the Government of the day decided that rail was uneconomic so the service was stopped and the tracks pulled up.

Years later, someone decided it would make a great walking and cycling track and it has now grown into a very popular tourist attraction. There is always someone going by, from toddlers to grandparents. I have seen mountain unicycles, babies in trailers, and have spoken to a bloke who has cycled across America twice.

There are around 60 pickers out in the orchards and the fruit is trucked in twice a day and put in cool stores at freezing point. Once the fruit reaches this temperature it will last virtually forever. My job is to keep the plant running by transporting the fruit from the cool stores to the computer graders. From there it goes automatically to the various bins where it is packed in cardboard boxes and then palletised for export. Overripe fruit is a curse as it gets smeared over everything, so you either chuck it or eat it. There is nothing quite like an apricot, peach, nectarine or plum the size of your fist dribbling juice down your chin, LOL. The season starts off with cherries which is what we are doing now, and things will start getting hectic in a couple of weeks.

The fruit is transported in wooden boxes which tend to get rough treatment so I do running repairs in any spare moments.

Staff is mainly backpackers from all over, working their way round the world so we have a real cosmopolitan atmosphere.

This area has a micro climate that is great for growing grapes so the family has recently branched out into wine making and this is an area of the business that is growing rapidly.

As I am away from home for three months, I have a solid two roomed tent all set up in a camping ground by a river, with heating, cooling, cooking and a couple of laptops and a widescreen LCD TV which doubles as a monitor. Very comfortable..
