Recently my home computer had issues with antivirus 2009 while I was away at college. I told my family to igone the messages and that they were probably fake, but they aren't the most computer literate people so who knows what happened. I come home to find that our computer is in semi working condition.

Google searches are often redirected to various add websites, and websites that are typed in the address bar often result in the message saying that "the page cannot be displayed." As time goes on, more and more sites are blocked and this morning the no web pages would display. Maybe this is a result of the AVG antivirus i tried to install, I don't know.

Also, I've made several attempts at downloading and running antispyware to fix the problem as that has worked in the past. Unfortunately many of the websites are blocked and other times programs won't download. I finally got around that by downloading the programs on my laptop and then using a flash drive to bring the programs over. Still, the progams won't install or run correctly on the desktop. AVG delivers error messages when trying to scan, Spybot S&D won't even start up, and malwarebytes antimalware won't even install. Similar occurences have happened to other programs. And to top everything off, our computer periodically freezes.

Thanks

Here come the logs.

Alright I was reading around while I was waiting for a response, and I came across this post http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...033&hl=zarf and this user seemed to be having the same exact problem as I have. So I followed the steps recommended to him, and got almost all the same results. Google is no longer redirecting, and antispyware is running.

This is pretty much what happened:
I ran ATF cleaner successfully, ran OTscanIT successfully, and failed to run GMER at first. I then tried to run ComboFix with the windows recovery package but it would not start up. I tried to rename the programs, but this did not change anything. I then installed and used ERUNT and then Avenger. I used the script given to zarf and it produced very nearly the same result. It found the process, and upon restarting AVG antivirus restarted and found it so i moved it to the chest. I then was able to run ComboFix and GMER successfully. I didn't follow the next step about the ComboFix with the next thing because those particular programs did not show up in my HJT Log. I plan on doing the F scan online shortly after this.

I followed the same steps Spybot S&D ran and found several things that needed to be removed so I did that. AVG scan ran and found nothing after this.

My problem seems to be solved, but I'd hate for it to come back because it was especially nasty and I'm leaving for college again soon and my family will probably want a working computer. If you could look over things I'd really appreciate it. I'm going to post a new HJT log and my logs from the other programs that were run.

If I left any information out please just tell me and I'll get it to you promptly.

Thanks for your time,
Sheen

Hi ,

The forums are really busy, that explains why logs get behind. If you still need some help, please start with posting a new hijackthislog in this thread. Don't start with a new thread.
Then we'll take a look.

Regards,

Rosty.

Sorry for the delay. Here is a quick update. Everything is working i think, but the computer seems to be substantially slower in performing processes, especially internet explorer. I'm not sure if its the new AVG antivirus i have on the computer or if it is remnants of the virus infection.

Here is a hijackthis log.

Thanks for your help,
Sheen

Hi, this log looks clean.

It is also important to keep your Java updated as there is the possibility that some malware uses out of date Java installs to infect pc's. Test if your version is the latest here.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 11 .
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 11, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop (13.9 MB).
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

  • Clean out Temporary Files etc.
This program is for Vista, XP and Windows 2000 only
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All. Then remove the check mark for cookies
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    • Remove the check mark for Cookies
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt if asked .
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and
    • choose: Select All.
    • Remove the check mark for Cookies
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
It is a good idea to do this every few weeks as a lot of junk collects there over time.
  • Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
    Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

  • Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
    • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
    • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
    • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
    • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Click OK
  • Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program. If you want to help the developer of the program and get more information about what the programs that you see in Winpatrol please check out Winpatrol Plus. It does not need a new download.
  • If you are using Internet Explorer v. 7 please read and follow the recommendations at this site. http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm

  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least a few times a week (Once a day is a good idea). If you do not update your anti virus software it will not be able to catch new variants that come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Windows Firewall is not recommended.
Be restrictive with granting access to the Internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not, make the block permanent.
  • Never run two Antivirus programs or two Firewalls at the same time. They can interfere with each other and cause problems.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently or better yet set computer for automatic updates.
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
  • Read and follow the suggestions given at this web site by Miekiemoes http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiem...prevention.html that will give you more information on some of the points above.

  • Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. (preventionspeech by Elrond)
