Hello All!!

My system runs Windows XP Home, and for some reason my AV cleans all the detected infections, but they just keep coming back!! And the worst part is, the infection has spread to several computers on my wireless home network (probably on shared network drives and folders). I think that I may have other infections other than the Vundo, but I am not sure. HELP PLEASE!! Thank you all for your help without which us laymen would be lost to these dilemmas for eternity!

I have included the HijackThis log file as follows:

Hi, tekktronic

Welcome.

Please explain in details the problem. That should give us an idea on what to look for.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Install the Recovery Console upon request.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hello again and thank you for this consult.

It's been a few days since I've posted a reply. Sorry about the delay, I was away on vacation. Anyway, I ran into something very odd with my system since I got back, and I found out that my annoying little brother had ran SDFix on the system, having "done research" on the subject of vundo infection. I was naturally ticked off since I told him NOT to touch any of the systems until I had got back and heard from you guys (actually doubly ticked off since it was HIS unsafe computing habits that got my system into this mess in the first place!!) and thereafter booted up my system. Now here's the odd part: It boots up, and gets as far as the wallpaper showing up on the screen, but a cmd window shows up saying "SDFix is Finishing malware scanning Please be patient" or something like that. So I wait for it to finish up. Five and 1/2 hours later, it's still not finishing up!! So I get pissed off even more and close up the window, after which my system finally finishes booting up. It seems to operate rather normally now, meaning it's not bogging down or anything, no pop-ups, etc., except for that weird SDFix window. I've also been able to run a Malwarebytes scan, which dredged up zero infections, and experienced very little lag time in between opening multiple apps, and browser windows, even with the scan running in the background. I haven't shut down my system since then (that was today, it's still running) for fear of what else might happen. I've also effectively banned any of my siblings near any of the systems until all this is thoroughly resolved. So should I still go ahead and run Combofix, or should I just give up on this and do a clean install from scratch? I can run an HJT scan and/or DDS scan as needed and will post any logs you might request. Thanks!!

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring the task manager and stop the SDFIX process. Post a fresh HijackThis log.

P.S.: There's this thing called TJEnder.exe (Anti Trojan Elite) running. I opened msconfig and TJEnder is part of startup. When I tried to open the file path, it could not find it (C:\Program Files\Anti Trojan Elite\TJEnder.exe). What is this TJEnder.exe thing and can I safely remove it? Why isn't anything showing up on Anti Trojan Elite when I do a search? Thanks again!!

Posted Image Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

  • If you receive a message that Combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot, kindly write down on paper the list of files present in the message before continuing, and post it in your next reply.
  • Install the Recovery Console upon request.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

No request for help throughout private messaging will be attended.

For your review. Thanks!!!

P.S.: I wasn't able to monitor ComboFix running as i had to leave for a few hours. I fon't know if Recovery Console was installed. However, when I came back, ComboFix had restarted my system, and when I logged back in, ComboFix generated the report I sent. Is this OK? Thanks!

Hi, tekktronic

Since you are using AVG8, I am removing the folders and drivers of other Antivirus programs:
  • Copy the entire contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as CFScript.txt
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop

Wilco ASAP.

Also, is it possible if I can keep the Norton Security Scan? I don't want to delete that one. My AVG8 is expiring in a couple of days, and I do not wish to renew. If I can help it, I'd like to keep at least that. However, if you strongly recommend that I remove it, I will do so at the earliest convenience. Thanks so much!! :)

The Norton Security Scan I know is full of adware. I suggest you remove it.

Okay, will do ASAP. I am again out of town, and will work on the desktop when I get back.

But now my problems have been compounded. I have my other laptop with me (which is why I'm able to post to the forum right now); however, i have found mighty strange behavior from this particular system: The Security Center keeps turning itself OFF!! Every time I boot my computer up, it keeps giving me this Security Center warning. When I click on it, it tells me Security Center is OFF, even though my McAfee AV is running and up-to-date. When I turn Security Center back on, it tells me my Firewall is off, my AV is off, etc. What do I do? I can't afford to have this system offline as well (my other two systems are already down - one of which is the desktop we are working on!!), and I am at a loss on what to do. Please help me!!!

I have posted it as a separate topic on the forum: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/192758/unsure-if-infected-but-encountering-strange-behavior/

But i would appreciate it very much if you could take the time to take a look at this case. The desktop is only second priority to this laptop, as this is the system i lug around with me to work and such. I would be eternally grateful for your assistance in this matter. Thank you once again!!

tekktronic

P.S.: I ran Kaspersky on my laptop (as stated in the post linked above) and found Trojan-Downloader.WMA.GetCodec F and R strains on two infected files.
