I ran through the steps of going to Personalize-->Change Desktop-->Check box [x] Recycle Bin

The only problem is Recycle Bin is greyed out on the check box part. How can I fix this?

I've added a picture to help explain further.

I'd suggest first backing up your registry. Read the directions for this free tool in order to do that: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

Then, copy the stuff inside the code window below:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}]
@="Recycle Bin"

Create a new text document and paste the above copy into it. Save it with a .reg extension (ie Recycle.reg) - then double click on it and let it merge into your registry. This should restore the Recycle Bin entry in your registry.

I got the basics for this tip from here: http://forums.techguy.org/3507876-post2.html

It didn't work. I tried that before. I really hope I don't have to reformat. I think somehow I literally did get my Recycle Bin deleted from my computer. I can still send deleted stuff there. I can still do all of that, but I can't get it to show anywhere.

Try this...

Turn off User Account Control in the Users Control Panel
Reboot and see if you can do it then.
Go back and re-enable User Account Control and reboot.

No luck still. I had it turned off already. I tried turning it on. I rebooted, then tried again. Then I turned it off again, rebooted, and again no luck.

I figured it out in an unconventional way. I turned on side Gadgets, downloaded a Recycle Bin Gadget, then moved it back on my desktop.
