Hi good People,

I have the dubious pleasure of trying to remove a malware infestation on my mothers computer. I managed to boot it using UBCD4Windows and run Antivir and spybot. The following items were identified by the AV. I don't have all the details of the entries removed by spybot.

Sorry forgot to include this bit of info.
The scans also picked up 46 instances of something related to antivirus trigger. Can't remember the file names.

TR/Rootkit.gen
TR/Proxy.gen
TR/Fakealert.RD
Agent.OMZ.Fix.exe

This has stopped the pop-up warnings, but I still cannot browse the internet when booted in normal mode. In Safe mode I can browse most sites OK, but cannot access pages such as McAfee's freescan. I have managed to start Kaspersky Online Scanner and this is currently running.

I would be grateful for any assistance in identifying the offending programs.

Here are the logs from RSIT below.

Just an update on this Kaspersky online scanner has now completed with no infected files found.

Other symptoms of this problem machine are:
Cannot use windows update (Safe or normal mode)
Any downloaded AV that has browser control settings you cannot see the settings.

Annoying or what!

Hello!
My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

In order to see what's going on with your computer I may ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to resolve your issue. Please also share with me any information about how your computer is reacting and behaving each step of the way as we work through this process.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Also post a new RSIT log.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Hello Sam,

Many thanks for helping with this. :) I am well out of my depth in trying to clean this. I was considering saving the useful stuff and wiping the system for a complete rebuild.

I have run the program as requested and have attached the log generated. I have also attached the log from RSIT. It did not produce an info file this time.

A couple of notes on the machine.

I still cannot access the internet in normal mode. I get a blank screen in firefox and ie7 shows ie cannot display this page. I also still have a pop-up that appears after reboot - Symantec Email Proxy 1003,1. The machine is also very slow to respond.

Currently I am posting and downloading through my own pc which is protected.

Chris

Well I've good news and I've got bad news. The good news is that I'm not seeing any signs of an active infection. The bad news is that you've got other issues.

You never want to have more than one firewall and one antivirus installed. From looking at your log it appears that you have more than one of each of those. From the standpoint of your connection problem, having two firewalls installed, or even having one that was uninstalled improperly will definitely affect your connection.

First you need to uninstall Antivir completely.

Then you need to decide if you want to use Norton Internet Security suite or Trendmicro's suite. Once you decide which one you want to keep, you'll need to uninstall the other one.

Let me know how that goes and then post a new RSIT log.

Thanks again Sam.

I will get the additional software removed from the system. It may take me a while because Norton or Symantec is not showing in the add remove software and the same for Antivir. Trendmicro has removed sucessfully so part fixed. The symantec software is out of date and part of it is corrupted.

I'll post an update.

Chris

I suspected that Symantec was the culprit. We can remove it manually if you get stuck.

You will need to keep at least one antivirus program installed and running.
As far as the firewall, you can use Windows Firewall for now until we figure out what's blocking your connection.
