spybot S&D says that 3 entries of wildtangent stll remain

Dueto a blue screen error involving the logon process( I would give exact details but it was several days ago and I didn't take good enough notes), winxp media center 2005 has been reloaded( on top of itself) and updated completely. All drivers have been located by xpmce except for a touchpad driver which was downloaded and installed. Malwarebytes, avast,spybot SD, and adaware have all been allowed to go throught the hard drive and all problem files/entries were deleted/fixed.
Programs seem to all be working, the laptop is responding smoothly and there are no pop ups or error messages at the moment. This is a dell inspirion e1505/centrinto duo 1.67g/1gb memory/120gb HD.

My concern is that the last run of spybot listed 3 remaining instances of wildtangent. I allowed spybot to scan on boot up but the items remain unfixed. So I am unsure if the pc is 100% healthy.

Where should I start?

Have you tried running the scans from safe mode. As this will stop the app;ication from being active while the tool tries removing it?

You can also run this. There are safe mode instructions here too if needed.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".


Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

WildTangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. Its gaming plugin contains the WildTangent Web Driver, WildTangent Multiplayer Library, WildTangent Updater and WildTangent GameChannel. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet.

The software can be downloaded as a standard setup .exe file or installed by an activeX control from the vendor's web site. The program is bundled with Games from WildTangent and some WinAmp plugins. In addition, WildTangent is installed by some Internet Service providers such as Verizon and Bellsouth and comes preinstalled on some desktops from Compaq, HP, and Gateway. WildTangent also partnered with AOL to include itself as part of AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section.

Although it is not technically considered spyware, WildTangent does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system. Read more About the Wild Tangent Software and Web driver and WildTangent Overview.

If you don't want this program, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and double-click on Add/Remove Programs. From within Add/Remove Programs highlight "WildTangent" (if listed) and select Remove. If the program is not listed in Add/Remove, download and run the WildTangent Remover.

I'm more concerned about some of the other malware showing in your SAS log.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

I want to check before i run the malware bytes again.

I assumed the SASW log was a list of things which had been removed by running that software so I'm a little confused when you say "'I'm more concerned about some of the other malware showing in your SAS log."

Please correct me if the log is a list of remaining problems rather that a list of things removed.

The log shows a list of items removed. However, some are vundo related. Vundo is known to create numerous malicious files. SAS does not detect them all but MBAM usually does a better job.

Okay, I reran mbam and found Registry Keys Infected:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\{f919fbd3-a96b-4679-af26-f551439bb5fd} (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Delete on reboot.

I rebooted into safe mode because I had tried to remove this same result after reboot in normal mode earlier. I was surprised to see it had not been removed..

Spybot asked if this should be allowed and I said yes and rebooted.

I didn't see mbam start up or give any message to say the key had been deleted after the boot finished . I rebooted again into normal mode and spybot asked if i wanted to disable running mbam on reboot and i said yes.

there was no addition to the mbam log to say that the infected key had been deleted so what is next?

There is no need to have MBAM run at startup unless you are going to purchase a license key and take advantage of its real-time protection. The Protection Module uses advanced heuristic scanning technology to monitor your system. This technology monitors every process and stops malicious processes before they can infect your computer.

Now rescan again with MBAM but this time perform a Full Scan in normal mode and check all items found for removal. Don't forgot to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. When done, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.

That particular registry entry appears to be associated with WinFixer2005ScannerInstall.cab.

Some infections are difficult to remove completely because of their morphing characteristics which allows the malware to regenerate itself. Sometimes there is a hidden piece of malware which has not been detected that protects files (which have been detected) and registry keys so they cannot be permanently deleted. Disinfection will probably require the use of more powerful tools than we recommend in this forum. Before that can be done you will need you to create and post a DDS/HijackThis log for further investigation.

Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Psuedo HJT Report as part of its log.

When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. An expert will analyze your log and reply with instructions advising you what to fix. After doing this, we would appreciate if you post a link to your log back here so we know that your getting help from the HJT Team.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your post or make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your log in the thread titled "Post in this thread when you haven't received an answer in five days.".
