Cleaning up one of the worst infected computers I've ever had. Cleaned most of it out in safe mode with Kaspersky, AVG, Spybot, Adaware, among others.

Attached is the Hijack this log and AVG's report.

Ad-aware reports the following redirected host files which I am unable to quarantine or remove probably as the result of a lingering infection:

Thanks for the help in advance.

Redirected host file entry

Hello,

Are you a business? Do you want to clean both systems at once, or one at a time?

Not a business. One computer is my own and another is my friend's computer. I fall into a habit of cleaning up other peoples messes because they have no idea what they're doing.

I dont mind cleaning both at once, want to get this thing out of my hands.

Okay, I know what you said about Kaspersky in the other thread. I see AVG on this one as well as Kaspersky. Only one needs to be going. Two isn't good. Also, does this person use AOL still? I see all sorts of entries for it, but some of them say (file missing) so I don't know if everything AOL should stay or go.

I can always reinstall the AOL software and I will check with them if they need anything associated with it, but to make it easiest for us to clean up the computer let's assume they don't need it.

I'll give them a call about the AOL products but I tried to uninstall much of them because I was suspicious about all the processes they were running.

Hello,

Okay. Let me know what they say. For now, we'll do a couple of things :

Download the HostsXpert Here
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip

Unzip HostsXpert to your desktop

Open up the HostsXpert program.

* Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper left corner is enabled.
* Click back up Host files
* then click "Restore MS Hosts File"
* close program

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea

I ran a few scans in safe mode and AVG found "AVP Found Adware. Generic" in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Winwdows\CurrentVersion\Run\.

Other than that the programs are showing clean (Even Malwarebytes full scan), thoughts?

Hello,

One of the AVs, either Kaspersky or AVG8, needs to be disabled or uninstalled. When you have 2, both programs compete for resources, and the end result is neither does it's best and can cause system instability.

Do you have a filename to go with that registry path?

How is it running today?

I thought I was in the clear but apparently not. After running scans in Spybot, Malwarebytes, and AVG in Safe Mode (Which found nothing) I came back into a normal startup and ran adaware and the following was detected:

Family Name="Win32.Worm.KdCrypt"

Item Value="File: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{DA983904-2E8E-495F-9538-A3976480DE8D}\RP8\A0002495.exe

I removed it in AdAware, went back into safe mode and ran all the scans. Unfortunately, upon returning to a normal startup and running AdAware, the worm was still there.

It should be noted that when I run HostsXpert it says Error: Cannot create file C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

Also I removed Kaspersky and kept AVG.

Any thoughts?

Hello,

Actually that's good news! That simply means it's benign and not a threat. We'll take care of that now:

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it ( something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Now run your scans and see if it isn't gone. :)

Thanks,
tea

Okay great, I had also noticed that I had not updated Malwarebytes (As I had been afraid to connect to internet) and after running a scan I found 6 infections. I will try your method after running scans as well.

It looks like the infection hid itself in a restore file and possibly would have resurfaced if I restored my computer?

If you had restored to that particular point, then yes, it would have restored most likely.

Okay, everything appears to be okay but a couple flags have me wondering...

1. While I was earlier able to use HostsXpert to restore the MS hosts, I am unable to do so now. I receive the error message "ERROR: Cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts

2. I am curious what this entry is in the HJT log: O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll

Other than that, all seems to be okay..the computer loads pages faster than mine now.

Here is the HJT log:

Hello,

That file is perfectly legit, and necessary to the program it's associated with : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/n....dll-13129.html

The error you're getting may be related to Spybot. http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=5...amp;postcount=2

Happy New Year!
