Friends laptop wont connect to the net using IE. Ive removed 3 viruses from it using AVG.

I was able to install (from USB stick), run and update AVG, Spybot anf Firefox. I used firefox to carry out kaspersky scan - nothing was found (done after AVG scan).

I was not able to install zone alarm or run IE. - both fail when they try to connect to the net

The laptop was on my WLAN while I downloaded updates and my firewall stopped several attacks from it.

Kaspersky scan and HJT log below - however seems the HJT download failed.

Any help greatly appreciated as ever!!!
-always seems like im never on here for month and then its like 3 visits in 4 weeks

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE

Orange Blossom
Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.

Hello The doomed,

Since your logs don't show that much abnormalities,
I'm guessing some setting or security program may add to the problem.
Let's clean up a little :

Go to Start > Contro Panel > Software > Add/remove programs and uninstall next, if present: :Spybot - Search & Destroy
Viewpoint Media Player
WebFldrs

Please download and save to your Desktop : ATF Cleaner by Atribune. (This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only)Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Reboot your system.

The laptop was on my WLAN while I downloaded updates and my firewall stopped several attacks from it.

Can you elaborate somewhat on that ?
What attacks, from what program/application ?

Your JavaVM is also out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  • Click the Download button to the right of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 (first option).
  • Select your Platform (Windows version) and check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement
  • Click "Continue" and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe) and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Please post a fresh HijackThis log.

Greetings,
Thunder

Not at home right now so will check when I get in - approx 3 hours or so.

My machine (the one which was being attacked by the problem machine) flagged up the attacks with ZoneAlarm, the free version. Is it possible for me to check historically what was attacking it so I can give you full details?

Thanks!

Hello The doomed,

I'm sure the ZoneAlarm log can show you what programs tried to access the internet.
I'm just asking to find out if by chance you didn't block anything legitimate.

Hello The doomed,

The only thing your ZoneAlarm shows is blocked incoming traffic to your Bitcomet port ?

Go to Start -> Run, type cmd en click OK, a command window should open.
At the command prompt (> sign), type ipconfig /flushdns (note the blanc space between ipconfig and /) and hit the Enter button,
type exit and hit Enter to close the window.

What happens if you type in the url http://download.microsoft.com in Internet Explorer ?
Do you get redirected or do you get en error page ?

Please download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.)
  • Close all other running programs.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Click the >>>.
  • Click on Settings, then check the first five settings:
    • System Protection and Tracing
    • Processes
    • Save created processes to the log
    • Drivers
    • Save loaded drivers to the log
  • Click OK.
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.
Upon reboot, run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right (under Files) uncheck all drives with the exception of your C: drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for Show All.
  • Click on the Scan and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan. You will know that the scan is done when the Stop button turns back to Scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose New>Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode. However, do not use the MsConfig method to edit the Boot.ini.
Important!:Please do not select the Show all checkbox during the scan..

Greetings,
Thunder

Hello Td,

That log looks fine.

Download WinsockFix
Place it on your desktop.Start Winsockfix.exe and click "Reg backup"
Your current registry will be saved in the folder "ERDNT"
Then click FIX
Your system will reboot.

Upon reboot, check Internet Explorer again.

Hello Td,

You can move that one to the vault.
We'll clean up restore points later.

Greetings,
Thunder
