I have a Gateway 500x with XP home and it has no sound. The sound card is a Creative sb live gameport. In Device manager it shows a yellow exclamation mark. Under device status it says

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use (code 12)

Under other device it has a multimedia audio controller listed with a yellow question mark. It lists the same location as the Creative card PCI slot 3 (PCI bus2 device 11 function 0)

I have disabled the "other" device but it didn't help.

Is this sound card fried?
What else can I try before replacing it with a new one?

Thanks in advance for all replies

I'd try re-installing the driver before I'd pitch it

Hi

If you have yellow exclamation marks against any device in Device Manager it is usually driver related.
As a first step go into Device Manager and uninstall the sound card. Then reboot and Windows should detect the Sound Card and install the correct driver.
If that doesn't work, go to the Gateway website and download and install the latest driver for your Sound Card.

Thanks for the quick replies!

I tried to update the driver but it said there wasn't a better version than what was installed.

I will uninstall, reinstall and see if that helps.

uninstall, reinstall didn't solve the problem so i downloaded the drivers at Gateway and tried that but still no go.

Still get the same error (code 12)

I am thinking it is just dead.

Where would be a good place to look for a replacement? Store or website

edit

Opened up the case and found there is no wire going to the sound card. I was under the impression that there was a wire going from the cd player to the sound card. Is that right or am i missing something?
